I am in disbelief. Could be due to my expectations of fellow Americans. I give them to much credit most likely. Someone try to explain to me why this poor boy was suspended.

http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local-beat/Boy-Threatened-With-Suspension-Over-Toy-Gun-83473992.html

These kids are admired and even adored. I realize this was staged , but read the comments. They are for more disturbing.

I bring to you the future of America. Guns are bad, but kids in school plays about drugs and murder........
BRILLIANT!

I think there was a similar story recently about a boy (kindergartner or grade-schooler) being suspended for making a pistol sign with his hand.

This has gotten completely ridiculous.

The degree of control people are being placed under in the West, in order to make society safe has become absurd.

If only the whole world were made of Nerf!

Given the sensitivity of guns in schools...

Its only normal to teach a child that there is a stigma against guns in schools.

By punishing them, right? "Teaching" by punishing right?

Yes.

If a child does ill to society etc, you do not reinforce, you reprimand.

Sounds normal.

The grade schooler who made a gun with his hand was in all likelihood playing, not doing ill to society. The bureaucrats in charge (his teachers) simply went overboard.  Drama queens.  Wanted to be on the 11 o'clock news.

You could at least attempt to explain it to them once before "punishing" them.  Explanation is what teaching is about.  That was my point.

How is a toy gun from a G.I.Joe doing ill to society?

That is the worst argument I have ever heard. Kids who bring guns to school are not bringing guns to school because they started bringing toy guns previously. Toy guns are not a gateway to real guns. Kids who have access to guns normally access the guns from irresponsible adults. Or they purchase them through gangs on the black market. Toy guns are not the issue.  Gun education and zero tolerance are the problem here.

My ten-year old boy picks up a stick and uses that for a 'toy gun' ...
are they gonna suspend him for doing that?

Probably, you might want to have him checked out by a psychiatrist and prescribed him some adderall. No room for imagination or playful children in this world.

That was ridiculous. Not only are those kids ignorant, it took me ten minutes to load it because my company has the worst wireless internet in the world.
The kids in that video seem to have no sense of the value of a dollar (interestingly enough that isn't much anymore).

Right its a terrible argument, its a slippery slope, a fallacy.

Maybe this is a better argument...

Bringing guns to school is against the rules, toy guns look like real guns.

Therefore bringing toy guns to school is the same as bringing a real gun to school.

My argument (or schools argument)

If its a toy gun, then its a real gun

Its a toy gun.

Then its a real gun.

Valid but not true.

Schools have been punishing children for bringing and or making any weapon type object to school long before the recent school shootings, not to say that they haven't happen before. Even a piece of paper folded into a shape of a gun would get someone in trouble.
