http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/02/22/children.choking/index.html?hpt=C1

(CNN) -- It's a silent, often overlooked danger that kills dozens of children every year, and it's easily preventable: choking to death on food.

Now the largest pediatrician group in the United States is calling for warning labels on foods that pose the highest risk for choking.

The American Academy of Pediatrics estimates at least one child in the United States dies every five days from choking on food. The academy rates choking as the leading cause of death among children 14 and younger.

The group is issuing a policy statement calling on the government and manufacturers to implement a food labeling system warning parents of these risks.

"This is a call to action," said Dr. Gary Smith, a pediatrician and immediate past chairman of the Committee on Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

"For many years, the U.S. has protected children from choking on toys. We have legislation. We have regulation. We have voluntary standards. We have labeling. We have recall programs," said Smith, also director of the Center for Injury, Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

"But we don't have a consistent set of measures that have been put together for prevention of choking on food."

Children 4 and younger are at the highest risk for choking on food. Most only have their front teeth. They can bite off a piece of food, but they don't have molars in back to grind it.

"There are certain types of food that have high-risk characteristics that pose severe choking risks," Smith said. "For example, foods that are round or cylindrical in shape and are roughly the diameter of the back of a child's throat -- these types of foods can completely block the child's airway. When that happens, the child cannot move air. They then lack oxygen. And if that obstruction is not removed within a short amount of time, brain damage and death will ensue. So these are very serious choking risks."

The American Academy of Pediatrics lists hot dogs as the highest risk food for young kids. Grapes, raw carrots, apples and peanuts are also dangerous. Smith said he has treated many children who have died from choking on hot dogs and grapes.

"If I took the best engineers in the world and asked them to design the perfect plug for a child's airway, they couldn't do much better than a hotdog. It is exactly the right size and shape to wedge itself down into the back of a child's throat. It's compressible so it fits in very snugly, and it's almost impossible to dislodge."

Katherine Zuehlke knows this problem firsthand. She had a close call with her 2-year-old daughter, Tiffany, but her quick thinking helped save the child's life. Zuehlke said a candy-coated peanut became lodged in her daughter's throat.

"We flipped her over and started to pat her back pretty heavily," Zuehlke told the pediatrician group. "We were all really scared."

Zuehlke was lucky. As many as 100 families a year are not -- a rough estimate of how many children choke to death on food every year, according to the most recent statistics from a 2002 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study.

There is no centralized system for collecting data on child death and injury from choking on food.

Smith and the American Academy of Pediatrics want to see that change. Smith said he believes it's important to start a central database that includes those kinds of statistics.

"We can do it now for toys and other consumer products. But we can't do it for food. That's one of the things we're calling for in this new policy statement," he said.

In the meantime, the American Academy of Pediatrics lists a few tips on its Web site to help parents with problem foods. It suggests parents:

• Cut hot dogs lengthwise and grapes in quarters. This changes the dangerous shape of the food, which can block throats of young children and even teenagers.

• Avoid giving toddlers other high-risk foods such as hard candy, nuts, seeds and raw carrots.

• Never let small children run, play or lie down while eating.

The American Academy of Pediatrics' new policy statement on foods that pose a high-choking danger for children 14 and under appears online. It's scheduled for publication in the March issue of the journal Pediatrics.

Are you f**king kidding me?

Have we become this damned pathetic as a society that we need to put 'choking risk' labels on hot dogs and other foods?

Your bag of grapes now will have a choking hazard label on there?

Damn.

This is complete bullshit.

We are completely f**ked as a society.

When my kids were little (toddlers) there were some foods I just didn't give them. Among these were foods such as hot dogs, (whole)grapes, marshmallows, etc because they are in fact a choking hazzard. But it was a matter of common sense and I didn't need a warning label to tell me this.

That seems like what they are trying to do though...

I mean seriously, when they give the actual statistics of how many kids die from choking each year and how many of those are food related, it's moronic.

In nation of tens of millions of children, less than 100 choking/dieing on food isn't that big of a deal.

There are much bigger fish to fry.

Activism at its best I suppose...

I know a couple that lost a 2 year old from a hot dog. It was devastating for them.  Smart people but always in a hurry.  As the economy keeps deteriorating, this will happen more often.

While I do not agree with a Nanny State mentality, I would strongly urge people to look at what is put in hot dogs and do not feed them to any person in your family!!

Oh there are places out there--you needed to buy uncured meats in natural casing...

Applegate Farms sells an organic beef hot dog that contains no nitrates and is lower in fat.

Although, I do not eat pork, here is a place where you can order organic bacon and other uncured meats.

Monday, February 22, 2010

CHICAGO —  When 4-year-old Eric Stavros Adler choked to death on a piece of hot dog, his anguished mother never dreamed that the popular kids' food could be so dangerous.

Some food makers including Oscar Mayer have warning labels about choking, but not nearly enough, says Joan Stavros Adler, Eric's mom.

The American Academy of Pediatrics agrees. The nation's largest pediatricians group is calling for sweeping changes in the way food is designed and labeled to minimize children's chances for choking.

Choking kills more than 100 U.S. children 14 years or younger each year and thousands more — 15,000 in 2001 — are treated in emergency rooms. Food, including candy and gum, is among the leading culprits, along with items like coins and balloons. Of the 141 choking deaths in kids in 2006, 61 were food-related.

Surveillance systems lack detailed information about food choking incidents, which are thought to be underreported but remain a significant and under-appreciated problem, said Dr. Gary Smith, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Smith is lead author of a new policy report from the pediatrics academy that seeks to make choking prevention a priority for government and food makers. The report was released Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

Doctors say high-risk foods, including hot dogs, raw carrots, grapes and apples — should be cut into pea-sized pieces for small children to reduce chances of choking. Some say other risky foods, including hard candies, popcorn, peanuts and marshmallows, shouldn't be given to young children at all.

Federal law requires choking warning labels on certain toys including small balls, balloons and games with small parts. Unless food makers voluntarily put more warning labels on high-risk foods, there should be a similar mandate for food, the pediatrics academy says.

Adler, a Warren, N.J. attorney who pushed for more warning labels after her son died in 2001, says she hopes the academy's efforts will work. Several efforts to pass federal legislation for labels have failed in Congress.

The group also urges the Food and Drug Administration to work with other government agencies to establish a nationwide food-related choking reporting system; and to recall foods linked with choking.

The academy says the food industry should avoid shapes and sizes that pose choking risks.

Something as simple as making lollipops flat like a silver dollar instead of round like a ping pong ball can make a big difference, said Bruce Silverglade, legal affairs director at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which also has lobbied for more attention to choking prevention.

Grocery Manufacturers Association spokesman Scott Openshaw declined to say whether food makers would consider warning labels or new designs, but said making parents aware of choking dangers is key to keeping kids safe.

Openshaw said the industry would continue working with the FDA and USDA "to ensure that our products are as safe as possible."

At the FDA, spokeswoman Rita Chappelle said the agency will review the academy's analysis and recommendations. She said the FDA also would continue consulting with the Consumer Product Safety Commission on assessing choking hazards associated with food and take action on a case-by-case basis.

Adler considered herself educated about children's safety. Her son had eaten hot dogs before without any problem.

Hot dogs are "almost as American as apple pie," she said. "You really don't know how horrible it can be."

The warning on hot dogs should be about ground up cow and pig with whatever left over scrap organs are around the slaughterhouse made into a sexually perverted shape!

The real 'call to action' needs to be for the #1 killer of American kids, which is car accidents.  They consider a car seat safe and sellable after passing a 35mph test, which isn't much of a dangerous accident at all.  Then, most parents don't install their car seats properly.  And rear facing is much safer, yet the laws allow 1 year olds to face forward, causing broken necks instead of broken legs.  Sorry for the car seat conspiracy rant.  Cheesy

I love these opportunities to illustrate how it would work in a society that understood, respected and wanted liberty.

You go to grocery store that has what you want, and not what you don't want. If there aren't any, tell the store managers what you want. If enough of you express what you want, some entrepreneur will gladly open your dream store and the evil frankenfood stores will die. All we have to do is reclaim the responsibility of checking out our food provider on our own and, voila!, we get what we want. Freedom works that way. Grin

The way I see it is they are making a mountain out of a mole hill for a diversion--What diversion ?  I am not quite sure, there are so many things happening these days, but a diversion nonetheless.

Again, if they were really worried about the safety of our children here would be some great headlines:
