I watched 2001 again last week.  First time in years.

The primary visual representation of HAL, the computer, is the red-dot lens.  It looks like a single eye (Masonic/Illuminati symbolism?)

Also, when HAL is being shut down, he sings the song that scientists used to help create his voice, "Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two)":

Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer, do,
I'm half crazy all for the love of you.
It won't be a stylish marriage,
I can't afford a carriage,
But you'd look sweet upon the seat
Of a bicycle built for two.

Hearing the song made me wonder about the etymology of the word "daisy."

daisy (n.)
Old English dægesege, from dæges eage "day's eye," because the petals open at dawn and close at dusk.

Anyway, no telling what the meaning of the song is within the movie, but I'm sure it's there for a reason.  Probably some commentary on the elite's transhumanism.  My guess would be that Kubrick and Clarke didn't believe machines could be trusted.  They may get us to the next step in evolution, but we should never attempt to merge with them.

The Lucifer Project.

In the movie "2010," which Kubrick didn't make but is a follow-up to "2001," Jupiter turns into a new star.  A second sun for our solar system.

I'd forgotten about how NASA crashed the Galileo spacecraft into Jupiter in 2003.  They announced that it fell into the atmosphere and that was it, but the article at the link below goes into some detail about the "crash."

http://www.enterprisemission.com/NukingJupiter.html

The enormous gravitational forces on the planet quickly crushed the craft, but its plutonium fuel pellets could have continued falling for a month before imploding and detonating in a series of nuclear blasts.  Given the amount of nuclear material in the pellets and the composition of the the gas giant Jupiter, a chain reaction could have occurred, igniting the planet.  Or so the article argues.

And now the Cassini–Huygens spacecraft is scheduled to crash into Saturn on September 15, 2017.  Like Jupiter, Saturn is a gas giant, with lots of hydrogen, and the Cassini–Huygens craft carries 73 pounds of plutonium.

NASA says they crash the craft into the planets so that they won't endanger the orbiting moons, but after learning what I have over the past few years, it wouldn't surprise me at all if the occultists at NASA were trying to touch off a new star.

Interesting subject at least.  Makes me wonder what Kubrick knew about it.  And Arthur C. Clarke.

The countdown begins: Cassini set to embark on final five orbits around Saturn before its 'death dive' through the planet's atmosphere

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-4776706/Cassini-set-embark-final-five-orbits-Saturn.html

So, on Aug 14 the spacecraft will deposit its 73 pounds of plutonium fuel in Saturn's atmosphere.  A similar maneuver on Jupiter created a giant black spot.  These are gas giants and scientists don't KNOW what will happen when the plutonium detonates.  Anyway, that's coming up on the 14th.  It took the fuel pellets a month to drop through Jupiter's atmosphere.  No telling what we'll see with Saturn (if anything), or when.
