Obama backs Moon return in NASA budget

    * 19:06 26 February 2009 by Rachel Courtland
    * For similar stories, visit the Climate Change , Spaceflight and Space shuttle Topic Guides

NASA will stay on track to return humans to the Moon by 2020, according to an overview of President Obama's 2010 budget request released on Thursday.

Recently, various groups - including Apollo astronaut Buzz Aldrin and the space advocacy group the Planetary Society - have called for NASA to send astronauts to new destinations, such as asteroids.

But the budget request backs a plan developed under the Bush administration to retire the space shuttle by 2010 and develop a system to return humans to the Moon by 2020.

However, the document does not specify whether the Moon return will be accomplished by NASA's Constellation programme, which aims to build a crew capsule called Orion and rockets called Ares to replace the shuttle.

Obama's transition team was reported to have raised questions about the programme's Ares rockets, which have been plagued by design concerns that include excess vibrations.

Some argue that existing rockets, such as the Atlas V or Delta IV currently used to loft spacecraft, would be better alternatives, while others back a new design.
'Proceed as you were'

NASA's former chief, Mike Griffin, was a staunch supporter of the Constellation programme, but he resigned in January and his successor has not yet been named.

"The budget doesn't say a whole lot about any specific system," says John Logsdon, a space policy analyst at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. "I wouldn't interpret the absence of the words 'Constellation', 'Ares', and 'Orion' one way or another. That's really up to the the new management team, when it gets there."

Indeed, NASA is planning to stay the course - at least for now. "The direction we have at the current time is, 'Proceed as you were,'" says agency spokesperson Stephanie Schierholz.

Under the proposed budget, the agency would receive $18.7 billion in 2010. Combined with $1 billion in funding provided in an economic stimulus package signed into law last week, NASA would get $2.4 billion more than it did in 2008.
Climate change

"It's a nice number," Logsdon told New Scientist. "Between the proposed increase and the stimulus package, NASA's $2.4 billion [would leave it] better off than it was last year."

The budget would also likely be a boost over 2009 funding levels. The agency's 2009 budget has not yet been settled. NASA has been operating at 2008 funding levels under a continuing resolution since October 2008.

But on Wednesday, the US House of Representatives passed an omnibus bill to fund NASA for 2009. It calls for a $360 million increase in the agency's human exploration budget, which includes $2.9 billion for the Constellation programme. NASA's science budget would decline $200 million from 2008 levels. The US Senate is now considering the bill.

Climate change research and monitoring tops the list of funding highlights in the overview of NASA's budget request, but the budget for specific agency programmes is not included. A detailed budget request is not expected before April.

I LMAO at the "moon stuff".  Really. Come on now.  Give me a break.

So - we went from like 1970 - 1977 (there abouts) over and over ...IT WAS EASY!  WOW!

Then they said - "nuffin' there - its boring" and just STOPPED?

Err ..ummm ...is that the nature of Gov't?  To just STOP something like that? < *cough* >

So - Anyways, last I heard (correct me if I'm wrong here) NASA (Never A Straight Answer) said they can't get back to the moon till 2019 ..then they said something like 2030!

LMAO!!

So, with that old ancient technology (you know - where you digital wrist watch took up an acre of computers) and old "rockets" under thier asses - they just went to the moon and went to the moon and went to the moon ...and FOUR WHEELED!  And played GOLF on the moon!!! Wow!

But somehow, today , somehow ..its just so damned hard to do?

Now you YOUNGER FOLK should really think about this - I'm an old fart.  I remember the trash on TV.  Guess what ! - I didn't believe it when I was a KID either!  Hahaha!

NASA funding is one of the few items of government spending I approve of. Your a damn fool if you believe the moon landings were faked. Even Alex Jones has publically stated on air that he doesn't belive the moon landings were faked.

Well then.  .. so in a polite and well fashioned manner you just called me a "Damned Fool".

And then you suggest that I "follow" AJ - <errrp> "to the moon".

CHUCKLES

I've enjoyed your posts.  Sometimes I differ a tad.  But seldom (umm ..make that never) do I call you a "Damned Fool" and accuse of you not following some icon.  Pretty sure.  I'll have to check. ...yeah pretty sure.

Hey - I am a damned unacknowledged fool.  8 years of engineering college and a lifetime of engineering experience at the age of 50.  Yuppers - I gotta say.  You're response has floored me with no ability to truly respond.   So many FACTS to defeat!  So much LOGIC employed!

Ought to be cheap indeed.  Using 1970 dollars technology - a f**king BUDGET BUY and we can get to the moon 20 times .... easily in one year!  Cheaply!

Bring it on!  I want to see that "boring old moon dust" and "boring old rock" - I want to WASTE that tiny minuscule amount of money on this worthless task - just for fun.

I bet they wasted 100 times this amount of money in the last 30 years studying how to best KILL A BABY A IN THE WOMB - Betcha they did!  Wanna bet?

I don't THINK they were faked (although there is some evidence that they were), but I do find it odd that we developed all that technology and then THREW IT ALL AWAY.  Which is exactly what we did with the Apollo tech.  We tossed it and began developing the Space Shuttle.

So after we landed on another celestial body multiple times, we decided to abandon that path and concentrate on building a low Earth orbit SPACE BUS?

 Huh

I really want everyone to see this "DEBATE" tween you and I.  And you leap to accusations of my state of mind.  Lets  just assume I'm "totally trashed" - I mean - lets say I got heroin pumpin through my veins and 3 pints of scotch racing through me - and LSD just kickin' in .. WOW!

Where,- in my text, does it indicate any LIES or MIS INFORMATION?  Do I anywhere, attempt to use any preconcieved understandings to underpin a lie?  Do I anywhere, make some false statement?  Huh?

Why have you so vociferously attacked me?  Why is the topic of MOON WALKING so HOT ?

Do YOU HAVE AN AGENDA?  It certainly smells like it!  Yes it does indeed!  look at the posts and returns. I have been very conserative, kind and considerate in my statements until YOU and another LEAPED on me and BEAT me up with slander.

I see NO DEBATE - NO LOGIC - NO FACTS - NOTHING - ...just SLANDER.

Perhaps you should get a job with the state department - err ...maybe you already got one eh?

Contray to the beleif that the NASA is motivated for puly sieintific research, space exploration etc.

The are in league with the military. FACT

FK the moon at this present time, Obama wants to feed the masses shhiite sandwishes, their methody on high is to bomb the people into a state of confusion,to remove the focus from  them and the criminal activity, wars, bailouts, panademics, carbon tax, etc. to this HorseS. Wow were going to tackle getting to the moon, how many will hear that and beleive it, isn't OBY great.

I'm all for exploring space, lets just for now keep our feet on the ground and bear witness to the insanity the NWO dumps on the masses.

There seems to be quite enough here on this planet to keep us busy.  The coming generation will be in boots, thats it, the lot of them, will they give one shiiite about the moonrocks.
Ya, FK it, if we this present geneation don't come around to the reality of the NWO-supercopr, octopus-take over the kids won't have a chance, indentured slaves to the GOV>

Quite simply easy....If we have been to the moon then we still have the technology to make it back! This is 2010 and there is no doubt in my mind that we have the technology. Again IF we indeed made it to the moon. I know others will slap me around for this statement but I really don't believe that we made it to the moon. I believe that it was faked. I cannot prove it because I was not there. I can say that there are numerous websites that point out the anomalies and the fake pictures.

Believe me, if we had the technology and the spacecraft in the 60's and 70's to make it to the moon, then we can go tomorrow...why wait until 2020?? Seems to me that NASA is hiding something and eventually the truth comes out and NASA's fake Moon trips will soon come out and prove to the world that it was indeed a space race that the USA was not going to lose....

Just my opinion...

watch  the video closely at the right side of the screen at the 1:38-1:48  and you will see a man without a space suit walk into the camera and pick something up off the ground while supposedly being on the moon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFs-iNNfU1I&feature=player_embedded#

oh and who operated the camera  as the last mission to the moon ? the lunar module as it  left the moon was followed by the camera.

will have to find the video on it. at 19:40 in the video when they lauch off the moon where is the flame  and who retrieved the footage from the camera on the moon if they all had left?

Let independent scientists examine the "moon rocks". This will end the ages long debate. No, not the FAKE moon rocks that they gave to the Dutch. What was that all about?

Hey Nailer. I also like how there is no dust blown by the rockets into the "feet" of the module legs. Everything is so clean. Regarding the rivets. Good grief. I think this is the first time i've seen that.  Good photo.

About 5-7yrs ago NASA  on their website had a article claiming they had a ION powered engine  that would enable space flight at speeds  over 100,000 miles per hour  except being  they had no materials that would keep a marble sized space rock from slicing through the ship like a hot knife going through butter.

Now  last year I was going to check for updates and the article was gone , erased from the site.

The only way Man could get to the moon is by using  ET space craft/technology  that has crashed here  but the radiation belt still poses a problem for humans .

And  earth has a atmosphere /ozone  to protect us from radiation , the moon does not and those  space suits surely were not lead lined( make the suit weigh 200lbs) to protect the astronauts when they were supposedly walking on the moon.

Excited astronomers say they could find Earth-like planets in just a few years

WASHINGTON - Astronomers say they are on the verge of finding planets like Earth orbiting other stars, a key step in determining if we are alone in the universe.

A top NASA official and other leading scientists say that within four or five years they should discover the first Earth-like planet where life could develop, or may have already. A planet close to the size of Earth could even be found sometime this year if preliminary hints from a new space telescope pan out.

At the annual American Astronomical Society conference this week, each discovery involving so-called "exoplanets" - those outside our solar system - pointed to the same conclusion: Quiet planets like Earth where life could develop probably are plentiful, despite a violent universe of exploding stars, crushing black holes and colliding galaxies.

NASA's new Kepler telescope and a wealth of new research from the suddenly hot and competitive exoplanet field generated noticeable buzz at the convention. Scientists are talking about being at "an incredible special place in history" and closer to answering a question that has dogged humanity since the beginning of civilization.

"The fundamental question is: Are we alone? For the first time, there's an optimism that sometime in our lifetimes we're going to get to the bottom of that," said Simon "Pete" Worden, an astronomer who heads NASA's Ames Research Center. "If I were a betting man, which I am, I would bet we're not alone - there is a lot of life."

Even the Roman Catholic Church has held scientific conferences about the prospect of extraterrestrial life, including a meeting last November.

"These are big questions that reflect upon the meaning of the human race in the universe," the director of the Vatican Observatory, the Rev. Jose Funes, said Wednesday in an interview at this week's conference.

Worden told The Associated Press: "I would certainly expect in the next four or five years we'd have an Earth-sized planet in the habitable zone."

Worden's centre runs the Kepler telescope, which is making an intense planetary census of a small portion of the galaxy.

Unlike the Hubble Space Telescope, which is a general instrument, Kepler is a specialized telescope just for planet-hunting. Its sole instrument is a light meter that measures the brightness of more than 100,000 stars simultaneously, watching for anything that causes a star to dim. That dimming is often a planet passing in front of the star.

Any planet that could support life would almost certainly need to be rocky rather than gaseous. And it would need to be in just the right location. Planets that are too close to their star will be too hot, and those too far away are too cold.

"Every single rock we turn over, we find a planet," said Ohio State University astronomer Scott Gaudi. "They occur in all sorts of environments, all sorts of places."

Researchers are finding exoplanets at a dizzying pace. In the 1990s, astronomers found a couple of new planets a year. For most of the last decade, it was up to a couple of planets every month.

This year, planets are being found on about a daily basis, thanks to the Kepler telescope. The number of discovered exoplanets is now well past 400. But none of those has the right components for life.

That's about to change, say the experts.

"From Kepler, we have strong indications of smaller planets in large numbers, but they aren't verified yet," said Geoff Marcy of the University of California at Berkeley. He is one of the founding fathers of the field of planet-hunting and a Kepler scientist.

But there is a big caveat. Most of the early exoplanet candidates found by Kepler are turning out to be something other than a planet, such as another star crossing the telescope's point of view, when double-and triple-checked, said top Kepler scientist Bill Borucki.

Kepler is concentrating on about one-four hundredth of the nighttime sky, scanning more than 100,000 stars, ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand light years away. A light year is about 5.9 trillion miles. So such planets are too far to travel to, and they cannot be viewed directly like the planets in our solar system.

If there were an Earth-like body in the area Kepler is searching, the telescope would find it, Marcy said. But it can take three years to confirm a planet's orbital path.

What Kepler has confirmed so far keeps pointing to the idea that there are many other Earths. Before Kepler, those bodies were too small to be seen. Borucki this week announced the finding of five new exoplanets - all discovered in just the first six weeks of planet-hunting. But all those planets were too large and in the wrong place to be like Earth.

When Kepler looked at 43,000 stars that are about the same size as our sun, it found that about two-thirds of them appeared to be as life-friendly and nonviolent as our nearest star.

Marcy, who this week announced finding a planet just four times larger than Earth, does not like to speculate how many stars have Earth-like planets. But when pressed, he said Thursday: "70 per cent of all stars have rocky planets."

"If you are in the kitchen and are trying to cook up a habitable planet, we already know that in the cosmos, all the ingredients are there," he said.

While astronomers at the convention are excited about exoplanets, Marcy is more skeptical, as is Jill Tarter, director of the SETI Institute, which seeks out intelligent life by monitoring for electromagnetic transmissions. They said there is still the chance that the searches can come up empty.

Marcy said there is the small possibility that planets do not form easily at Earth's size, and that most are bigger.

Tarter - who was the basis for a character portrayed in the movie "Contact" by Jodie Foster - said: "I always worry that we talk ourselves into thinking we know more than we know."

Once an Earth-like planet is found in the right place, determining if there are the ingredients for life there will pose another hurdle.

It will require costly new telescopes. A massive space telescope to scan Earth-like planets for oxygen, water, carbon dioxide - and even faint signs of industrial emissions from civilization - would cost about $5 billion.

For now, such a high price is a budget-buster, but that could change. Cornell University astronomer Martha Haynes said: "We are at a very special moment in the history of mankind.

watch this video at the 4 minute to the 4:29 mark and when the lunar module takes off it is followed by the camera,  who was operating the camera?

Radio and/or program?

Radio and/or program?

Bill Clinton:

"Just a month before, Apollo 11 astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong had left their colleague, Michael Collins, aboard spaceship Columbia and walked on the moon, beating by five months President Kennedy's goal of putting a man on the moon before the decade was out. The old carpenter asked me if I really believed it happened.  I said sure, I saw it on television. He disagreed; he said that he didn't believe it for a minute, that "them television fellers" could make things look real that weren't. Back then, I thought he was a crank. During my eight years in Washington, I saw some things on TV that made me wonder if he wasn't ahead of his time."

Bill is such a sleaze ball - total slime job.  Here he "leaks" truth - I have no respect for that piece of trash what so ever.  He was likely the most disgusting president we ever had.  Pure FILTH - Look at his accomplices in Arkansas - what a dirty filthy person this guy is.

I thought I saw them all. This one is SPECTACULAR!

I love this.  I'm sorry - I really love this lie - I laugh my ass off every day as we all MARCH INTO THE FUTURE with technology ROMPING along with us.  And the exposures, more and more of the OBVIOUS LIES!

Sorry guys - you two that trashed me. ...Sorry.  I'm the one LIVING IN REALITY and YOU are the ones living in FANTASY LAND!  There is NO f**kING WAY WE WENT and there is NO f**kING WAY WE CAN!

I really love this shit so much.  Makes 911 look like 'peanuts'.  And virtually the ENTIRE PLANET has been CONN'ED by this.

Ok  ok - there is ONE MORE thing that is really bigger - and that is the FEDERAL RESERVE PRINT PRESS SYSTEM - ..Yes that bigger.  But much harder to get into the minds of people due to the complexity of trash they've used against us all.

OK.

Wow - I think I just found proof we did in fact, go to the moon.

I really feel embarrassed about this.  But I must stand clean, tall, and truthful.  Here is the video that has convinced me that the world is correct and I'm just a nut case:

I must admit that while being open minded I can't accept the moon landings didn't happen but this one is pretty convincing. It must either be
-a fake video or
-an automatic camera of some sort.
I'm not convinced by either explanation. Someone please debunk!

The one with the person walking onto the set just has to be a fake (doesn't it??).
