Shake Shack Is Up Against Everybody Else's Better Burger - No hormones, but not a lot of sales growth either

, by Venessa Wong (Bloomberg)
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-03-12/shake-shack-is-up-against-everybody-else-s-better-burger

Shake Shack's initial public offering at the end of January got customers and investors excited, more than doubling the stock price.

Now it looks like restaurateur Danny Meyer's gourmet burger chain is facing intensifying competition in its upscale niche.

What McDonald's New Stance on Antibiotics Really Means
11 March 2015
, by Julie Hyman (Bloomberg)
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-03-11/what-mcdonald-s-new-stance-on-antibiotics-really-means

Excerpt:

Playing catch-up with fast-food rivals, the chain has told producers it won't buy animals treated at any stage with antibiotics important to human medicine

McDonald's grabbed headlines last week by announcing that in the next two years, it will stop serving chicken treated with some antibiotics.

It joins such rivals as Chick-Fil-A, Chipotle Mexican Grill, and Panera Bread.

McDonald's new chief executive, Steve Easterbrook, is trying the ban, among other initiatives, to persuade consumers that Mickey D’s food isn’t cooked up in a lab using robo-chickens and extracts.

I'm surprised McDonald's hasn't employed the "lesser of two evils" argument to reverse their decline in sales.

A while ago, cattle ranchers were pressured into no longer using the growth drug, Zilmax, as people were outraged that it caused cattle hooves to fall off.

Now, instead of using Zilmax, ranchers use Ractopamine (Banned in Europe), a drug that could be considered far worse.

McDonald’s franchisees are not happy
15 April 2015
, by Tomi Kilgore (MarketWatch)
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/mcdonalds-franchisees-are-not-happy-2015-04-15

Excerpt:

Franchisees’ business outlook, relationship with corporate worst in more than 11 years

McDonald’s Corp. franchisees are as upset with the company and despondent about their sales outlook as they’ve been in over a decade, according to a survey conducted by Janney Capital Markets.

The results of the survey prompted Janney analyst Mark Kalinowski to cut his March same-store sales estimate to a decline of 3.7% from 3.5%.

He also cut his first-quarter earnings per share estimate to $1.06 from $1.15.

McDonald’s system is broken. They talk menu reduction to help our people, simplify our menu for customers—but add products to help sales and it doesn't work. We will continue to fall and fail. Anonymous franchisee

McDonald’s stock a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.1% in afternoon trade Wednesday, while the Dow rose 0.6%.

Kalinowski kept his rating on the stock at neutral, and his fair value estimate at $89, which is 7.8% below current levels.

MSM saying McDonalds sales are down 33% in YOY change.
(year over year = YOY) and their brainiac plan to boost sales
is to "remodel" the stores and give them a new look.  Yeah,
throw good money after bad, but then that will help some
contractor and sub-trades make some money.

Article here says they plan to close 700 stores this year,
bet it'll be way more before year end.

McDonald’s to Close 700 Stores

Fast food giant admits it quietly closed 350 stores in Q1

 by Kit Daniels | Infowars.com | April 23, 2015

McDonald’s closed 350 stores in the first three months of 2015 and is planning to close an additional 350 by the end of the year.

The struggling fast food giant recently announced it was closing 350 poorly performing stores this year, but on Wednesday McDonald’s admitted it had closed a previously unannounced 350 stores in the U.S., Japan and China.

“Earlier on Wednesday, McDonald’s reported an 11% decrease in revenue and a 30% drop in profit for the first three months of year, a continuation of its troubles in the last two years as it has struggled to compete with new U.S. competitors, a tough economy in Europe and a food safety scare in Asia,” Fortune reported.

McDonald’s started falling into a steep decline after customers began seeking healthier alternatives, a decline which may prove terminal for the world’s largest fast food chain.

It was definitely a sign of the times when Hillary Clinton stopped to eat at Chipotle while campaigning in Iowa earlier this month, two decades after her husband famously stopped at a McDonald’s while jogging.

“The world is starting to ask what they’re truly eating in their food — and the new conglomerate of natural grocers and restaurants are trailblazing the way into an entirely new economic environment,” Anthony Gucciardi wrote. “In other words: people are simply tired of shoveling garbage into their bodies, and they’re not going to put up with it anymore.”

And price conscious consumers aren’t just limited to McDonald’s nowadays: natural food outlets such as Whole Foods are offering organic foods at the same price as a Big Mac with fries.

“McDonald’s is a huge company, a huge supply chain spread everywhere, and it’s kind of getting nibbled at the margins by all these upscale burger chains, organic places [and] locally sourced food,” Yahoo finance columnist Rick Newman wrote.

It would be nice if McDonald's woke up and realized what the problem is.

Quote
Is McDonald’s doomed?’ Business Insider declares that ‘McDonald’s Is Losing America’ as the company fires its own CEO. What’s happening? As it turns out, the world is starting to ask what they’re truly eating in their food — and the new conglomerate of natural grocers and restaurants are trailblazing the way into an entirely new economic environment. In other words: people are simply tired of shoveling garbage into their bodies, and they’re not going to put up with it anymore.

Here’s just a few of the ingredients you can find in many fast food meals:
•Dimethylpolysiloxane – A chemical known for its use in silicone breast implants, silly putty, and also… chicken nuggets
•Propylene glycol – A laxative chemical and electronic cigarette filler that even e-cigarette companies are beginning to phase out
•Azodicarbonamide – A chemical used in the creation of foamed plastic items like yoga mats

So are you surprised to find that many are turning away from fast food leaders like McDonald’s?

Nations around the world are already rejecting the ensemble of artificial ingredients included in many staple McDonald’s meal options. Back in 2013, their attempts to expand operations in Bolivia were completely shut down by the reality that the Bolivian citizens were not willing to purchase their fast food creations. As reported back in July of 2013:

“McDonald’s restaurants operated in Bolivia for 14 years, according to Hispanically Speaking. In 2002, they had to shutter their final remaining 8 stores because they simply couldn’t turn a profit—and if you know fast food companies, you know it’s not because they didn’t try.

The Golden Arches sunk plenty of money into marketing and campaigning—trying to get the food-loving Bolivians to warm to their French fries and burgers, but it simply wasn’t happening.”

McDonald’s Ignores Requests For Healthier Options, Decides Lower Prices Are More Important

Revamp prices as it tries to turn around its struggling U.S. operations.

McDonald’s Corp. is moving ahead with plans to simplify its menu and revamp prices as it tries to turn around its struggling U.S. operations.

The company MCD, -0.73% plans to display only the top-selling items from its drive-through business on the outside menu boards as a way to speed up orders, executives told U.S. franchisees during a webcast on Monday, according to people familiar with the matter.

In an effort to appeal to a broader range of customers, executives said, McDonald’s also will beef up midpriced menu items with products that cost between $1.50 and $3, more than those on the Dollar Menu but less than the more premium-priced products.

The company plans to add a McChicken sandwich with leaf lettuce and tomato, as well as a double burger with leaf lettuce and tomato for around $1.50, up from the current range of $1.19 to $1.39, these people said.

Why McDonalds Is Ending Monthly Sales Reports: Global Sales Drop For 12 Consecutive Months
8 June 2015
, by Tyler Durden (Zero Hedge)
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-06-08/why-mcdonalds-ending-monthly-sales-reports-global-sales-drop-12-consecutive-months

But perhaps the biggest irony is that the drop was driven not by Europe or Asia, where one would expect the strong dollar to be wreaking havoc on US-denominated sales, but in the US, where same store sales dropped -2.2%, more than the -1.7% expected.

Last month for the first time in years, McDonalds
sent out a giant glossy advertisement with coupons
for their junk food and drinks.  I don't eat there but
I glanced at the coupons and then read the terms for
using them, it was as if it was more expensive to get
something there with the coupons then it would have
been to just buy off the menu.    I passed the coupons
on to others who think McDonalds is deliciously good LOL

McDonald’s Hires Ex-Obama Press Secretary as Communications Head

Will help company fight to lure back customers

 by Reuters | June 9, 2015

McDonald’s Corp said it hired Robert Gibbs, U.S. President Barack Obama’s press secretary during his first term, as its chief communications officer.

The world’s biggest restaurant chain by sales also named Bacardi Ltd’s Silvia Lagnado as its chief marketing officer, a position vacant since 2010.

Chief Executive Steve Easterbrook laid out plans in May to overhaul the company’s businesses and management as part of efforts to make the fast-food chain a “modern, progressive burger company.”

McDonald’s, which on Monday reported its 12th straight decline in monthly same-store sales, is fighting to lure back customers lost to more nimble rivals and increasing demand for fresh, less-processed food.

Sales at stores open at least 13 months fell 0.7% globally in the latest quarter, worse than the 0.4% analysts polled by Consensus Metrix had expected.

The 2% drop in the U.S. was worse than the 1.5% drop Consensus Metrix had forecast.

McDonald’s Plans to Shrink by 59 Locations This Year in U.S.

McDonald’s Corp. plans to shrink by 59 locations this year in the U.S. as the company cuts costs and tries to revive sales.

The chain is closing 184 restaurants and opening 125 new ones in 2015, according to a franchise operations document filed with the Minnesota Department of Commerce last month.

The company said in June that it was closing more U.S. restaurants than it was opening this year but didn’t give an exact figure.

McDonald's Corp said on Thursday it laid off in July 135 employees at its U.S. headquarters and 90 corporate employees posted overseas as part of a major restructuring at the fast-food chain, which has been fighting to reverse a long sales slump.

McDonald's Chief Executive Steve Easterbrook in May announced plans cut $300 million in costs by the end of 2017 as part of a corporate reset that includes simplifying and streamlining operations to make the company more nimble in an intensely competitive market.

They did too little way too late to turn the failing sales situation
around.  This always happens, and to people also, they're going
down with the ship, they saw it coming and don't do anything to
turn it around, do something before it crashes until moments
before which of course is too late.    Will be interesting to see
come January 2016 on what McDonald's restaurants (and I hate
using that word, they are not a restaurant in my opinion) closes
their doors and rips the yellow arches off their high in the air signs.

McDonald's will install self-serve kiosks at locations nationwide

December 1, 2016

By Rick Moran

In light of several cities passing $15 an hour minimum wage laws, McDonald's will install self-serve kiosks at many locations around the country. Wendy's has already gone the automated ordering route and othe fast food outlets are seriously considering it.

Supporters of the $15 hourly wage claim that few jobs will be lost as result of automation. They say the self serve kiosks will make workers more efficient in dealing with the ordering process. That may be true (as explained here). But the near doubling of the minimum wage in most cities will be done incrementally, ostensibly to soften the blow to businesses. But that kind of thinking ignores the flash point where labor costs cannot be compensated for by raising prices. Eventually, something is going to have to give.

Forbes:
It’s not just McDonald’s that has embraced job-replacing technology. Numerous restaurant chains (both quick service and full service) have looked to computer tablets as a solution for rising labor costs that won’t adversely impact the customer’s experience. Eatsa, a fully-automated restaurant concept, now has five locations—all in cities or states that have embraced a $15 minimum wage. And in a scene stolen from The Jetsons, the Starship delivery robot is now navigating the streets of San Francisco with groceries and other consumer goods. The company’s founder pointed to a rising minimum wage as a key factor driving the growth of his automated delivery business.

Of course, not all businesses have the capital necessary to shift from full-service to self-service. And that brings me to my next correct prediction–that a $15 minimum wage would force many small businesses to lay off staff, seek less-costly locations, or close altogether.

Tragically, these stories—in California in particular–are too numerous to cite in detail here. They include a bookstore in Roseville, a pub in Fresno, restaurants and bakeries in San Francisco, a coffee shop in Berkeley, grocery stores in Oakland, a grill in Santa Clara, and apparel manufacturers through the state. In September of this year, nearly one-quarter of restaurant closures in the Bay Area cited labor costs as one of the reasons for shutting down operations. And just this past week, a California-based communications firm announced it was moving 75 call center jobs from San Diego to El Paso, Texas, citing California’s rising minimum as the “deciding factor.” (Dozens of additional stories can be found at the website FacesOf15.com.)

Other states are also learning the same basic economic lesson: Customers have a limit to what they will pay for service. Voters in Washington, Colorado, Maine and Arizona voted to raise minimum wages on Election Day, convinced of the policy’s merits after millions of dollars were spent by union advocates. In the immediate aftermath, family-owned restaurants, coffee shops and even childcare providers have struggled to absorb the coming cost increase—with parents paying the cost through steeper childcare bills, and employees paying the cost through reduced shift hours or none at all.

Automating the order process is only the beginning. Any repetitive task will eventually be done by robots. Most orders at future fast food restaurants will be filled by machines that place the burgers on the grill, flip them, place them on a condiment-laden bun, automatically fill the drink order, and send the finished product to a worker who will either bag it for carry out or put it on a tray for in strore consumption. This is the future. And while it will take a sizable capital investment to buy the machines, they will pay for themselves in a couple of years.

People who support the "Fight for Fifteen" wage believe in magic. At the very least, they are ignorant of basic economics. Will they turn on organized labor when it becomes clear that unions had lied to them? No doubt they will blame "greedy franchise owners" for their predicament instead.
