Occam's razor. Creating robots is too complicated, even if it were possible to create life-like androids; psychology offers much, much better methods how to create a personality artificially. And I suspect "the perfect child actor" is VERY easy to create.

As for the high IQ of the children, they are genuinely bright (that's what got them on the stage), and they have experience with the larger world their peers can't even dream about, so they look to you smarter.

They are, just add greedy self absorbed parents who care more for their comforts than their child's development- no robotics required.
