Two Secret Service vehicles used by Vice President Joe Biden allegedly struck and killed a pedestrian at an intersection on Washington, DC's Suitland Parkway in the early morning hours of Wednesday, news reports say.

The vice president was not in either of the vehicles when the motorcade, on its way from Andrews Air Force Base to a garage on Washington, struck a pedestrian. A Washington Post traffic report states the accident took place at around 3 a.m. ET near the corner of Naylor Road, on the DC-Maryland border, but other sources place the accident closer to 2:30 a.m. ET.

The pedestrian was taken to St. George's Hospital with "multiple critical injuries" and declared dead later that morning, reports The Hill:

The circumstances of the accident, such as the color of the traffic light and the speed of the vehicles, were unclear but the Park Police was investigating.

Secret Service spokesman Malcolm Wiley said the employees involved in the accident remained at the scene and administered first aid to the man until an ambulance arrived to take him to the hospital.

US Park Police are investigating the accident. As of Wednesday afternoon, they had not released the victim's name.

The Gazette in Gaithersburg, Maryland, reports that two Secret Service agents were the only occupants of the vehicles at the time.

The two vehicles had been flown back to Washington, DC, from Tacoma, Washington, where they were used to transport the vice president to and from a speaking engagement. They were headed to a Secret Service garage at the time of the accident.

The vehicles will remain in Park Police custody during the investigation, which is expected to take about a week.

A police car assisting Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s motorcade collided with another vehicle on the West Side of Manhattan on Tuesday as Mr. Biden was on his way to appear on a television show, the police said.

The accident took place just before 6 p.m. on the corner of West 49th Street and 10th Avenue as the police car was driving ahead of Mr. Biden’s motorcade to help clear the way, the authorities said. Mr. Biden was on his way to a taping of “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart,” which is recorded at a studio on 11th Avenue near West 52nd Street.

The police car, the authorities said, was part of an “advance element” of the motorcade made up of three marked police cars that traveled about three minutes ahead of Mr. Biden’s vehicle to help clear the way and make sure there were no “breakdown issues” along the way.

As the marked cars traveled west on 49th Street with lights and sirens on, one of them collided with a livery cab at the intersection. Two officers and the driver of the livery cab were taken to a hospital with neck and back injuries, the police said. None of the injuries were serious, the police said.

The vice president went on with the taping of the show as planned, according to a spokesman for “The Daily Show.”

It was the second accident involving Mr. Biden’s motorcade this week.

On Monday, a sheriff’s vehicle escorting Mr. Biden’s motorcade in Albuquerque was hit by a car that went around two units blocking an intersection, injuring a sergeant in the vehicle.

Last week, a man in Maryland was killed when he was hit by two Secret Service cars: a limousine sometimes used by Mr. Biden, and a Chevrolet Suburban used in his motorcade. Mr. Biden was not in the limousine or the Suburban at the time of the accident.

November 12, 2009 Two U.S. Secret Service armored vehicles used to protect Vice President Biden struck and killed a pedestrian in Temple Hills early Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The vehicles were traveling together from Andrews Air Force Base at about 2:30 a.m. when the pedestrian was hit at the intersection of Suitland Parkway and Naylor Road in Temple Hills, U.S. Park Police said.

The drivers stayed on the scene and rendered first aid until police and rescue officials arrived, said Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan.

The pedestrian, an adult male, was transported to Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly with multiple critical injuries, police said. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

The armored sport utility vehicle and limousine were occupied only by Secret Service employees and were not carrying the vice president or any other dignitaries, said Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan.

The vehicles, part of a fleet used to protect the vice president, were used to whisk Biden during his trip to Fort Lewis, Wash., and were heading back to a garage at the time of the incident. The armored cars were transported to and from Fort Lewis on military planes. The vice president was there to speak at a memorial service Tuesday for seven soldiers who were killed Oct. 27 in Afghanistan when their vehicle exploded after being struck by an improvised explosive device.

Biden returned to Andrews much earlier and was already at his residence at the U.S. Naval Observatory in Northwest Washington at the time of the incident, Donovan said.

Police have not released the pedestrian's identity pending notification of family. Park Police were still investigating the incident and had not determined a cause.

Vice President Biden’s motorcade was involved in a West Side collision that sent three people to the hospital today, sources said.
Biden, who was headed to an appearance on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," was not hurt.
It was the second accident for Biden’s motorcade in two days.
The latest crash occurred at 5:40 p.m. at West 49th Street and Tenth Avenue as Biden’s motorcade made its way uptown headed to the show’s 11th Avenue studio.
Cops had stopped traffic on Tenth to clear a path for Biden when a livery cab tried to get around it by driving up the left lane.
Meanwhile, three unmarked police cars were headed west on 49th Street.
At the intersection the middle car hit the livery cab, police and federal sources said.

The crash was a bizarre echo of an accident in Biden’s motorcade on Monday.



Police say a woman drove around two police units blocking the intersection and hit a car driven by a sergeant with BCSO.

No injuries or arrests have been reported, but the sergeant has been taken to Presbyterian Hospital for evaluation.

A sheriff's spokeswoman would not say whether the vice president had already gone through the area at the time of the accident.

VANCOUVER — Two former Olympians were injured when the United States vice-president’s motorcade was involved in a three-car collision on Sunday near Vancouver, RCMP said Sunday.

Joe Biden’s vehicle was not involved in the crash and he arrived at his destination safely, RCMP officials said in a news release.

The vice-president was in British Columbia to watch U.S. athletes compete in the 2010 Olympics.

U.S. media identified the injured women as Peggy Fleming, an ice skating gold medallist in 1968, and Vonetta Flowers, who won a gold medal in bobsledding in 2002.

Both were taken to hospital and released later on Sunday, according to a statement given to U.S. media.

RCMP officers are still investigating the cause of the crash, citing road conditions and a reported oil spill on the roadway as possible factors.

VANCOUVER -- The RCMP 2010 Integrated Security Unit is investigating whether an oil spill contributed to a car crash involving three vehicles at the rear of United States vice-president Joe Biden’s motorcade on Sunday.
The cause of the collision is under investigation. The RCMP said possible contributing factors include road conditions and a reported oil spill on the roadway.

Vancouver, British Columbia (CNN)  -- Two members of the U.S. Olympic delegation -- both gold medalists from previous Olympics -- suffered minor injuries Sunday in an accident as they were traveling in Vice President Joe Biden's motorcade, the White House said.

Peggy Fleming and Vonetta Flowers were taken to a hospital "as a precaution" after a van in the motorcade was involved in a minor accident, according to Biden spokesman Jay Carney. Both were later released from the hospital.

Neither Biden nor anyone else in the motorcade was involved in the incident, Carney said.

The statement did not provide further details about the accident.

Fleming, a champion figure skater, won gold during the 1968 Grenoble, France, games. She was the only American to place first during those games, according to the International Olympic Committee Web site.

Flowers earned gold in the 2002 Salt Lake City, Utah, Olympics in the two-person bobsled competition, according to the IOC.

WASHINGTON, Feb 14 (Reuters) - Vice President Joe Biden rejected assertions by Dick Cheney on Sunday that the Obama administration was soft on terrorism and waterboarding should have been an option for the suspect in an attempted Christmas Day airline bombing.

In an unusual round of dueling interviews played out across Sunday morning television talkshows, Biden said his Republican predecessor "either is misinformed or he is misinforming" and accused him of trying to "rewrite history."

Cheney, a chief architect of former President George W. Bush's counterterrorism policy and a harsh critic of President Barack Obama's approach, said Biden was "dead wrong" to have recently deemed another Sept. 11-style attack on the United States to be unlikely.

Peggy Fleming hurt in Biden motorcade crash
Former Olympian Vonetta Flowers also slightly injured, VP’s office says

VANCOUVER - Former U.S. Olympians Peggy Fleming and Vonetta Flowers were slightly injured Sunday in a collision involving the van they were riding in as part of Vice President Joe Biden's motorcade, Biden's office said.

NBC News reported that the collision occurred about 2:15 p.m. south of downtown Vancouver.

A statement from Jay Carney, Biden's communications director, said that the van was carrying members of the official U.S. Olympic delegation to an event, and that Fleming and Flowers sustained minor injuries and were taken to a hospital as a precaution. They were evaluated and released, the statement said.

The two former Olympians later attended a figure skating competition, sitting in the row in front of Biden.

Olympic authorities said the accident happened shortly before noon. Fleming said she and Flowers were riding in a van with hockey Olympian Mike Eruzione and White House and Secret Service personnel when the accident occurred. They were in the motorcade's next-to-last vehicle, which was rear-ended and hit the vehicle in front of it.

Scott Gordon, spokesman for the Integrated Security Unit, said the accident was possibly caused by poor road conditions and perhaps an oil slick.

Fleming won the women's ice skating Olympic title in 1968 in Grenoble, France. She also won five U.S. titles and three world championships.

Flowers was the first black person to win a gold medal in the Winter Olympics, winning the two-woman bobsledding event in 2002 as the brakewoman with driver Jill Bakken.

In November, an armored SUV and a limousine used to transport Biden struck and killed a man at an intersection in Washington, D.C. The Secret Service vehicles had been flown back from an event in Washington state, and Biden was not present.
