Roughly 14 Conspiracy theories regarding the September 11, 2001 attacks. Genuine scientific based facts mixed with disinformation and pure propaganda.

Everything counter to the official story is wrong according the News Corp's news.com.au.

Wrong. This one's a favourite of the conspiracy fringe - inspiring books, videos and countless other sites. The idea is that planes could not possibly have damaged the structure enough to bring down the towers.

We know it's rubbish because: in addition to several government body reports and media analysis, Popular Mechanics published a special study showing in devastating detail that it's rubbish.

'Fraid not. This theory stems from the testimony of Norman Mineta, former US transportation secretary, to the 911 Commission (watch it here). If you believe the theorists, he admits Dick Cheney had advance knowledge of the incoming plane and had ordered nothing be done.

We know it's rubbish because: according to the Washington Post, Mineta and Cheney both confirmed the order to "bring down the plane" if possible, not the opposite.

'Fraid not. This popular theory claims US fighter jets were so slow responding to the threat of hijacked planes that they must have had orders to let them hit their targets. It's known as the "stand down" theory.

We know it's rubbish because: as Skeptic magazine points out - intercepting an out-of-control jet is actually really hard. In 10 years before September 11, it had only been done once. The best explanation is not complicity, just confusion.

And the bullshit disinformation to muddy the waters ---

This is pretty out-there, even as September 11 conspiracies go. This is a cousin of the demolition theory, taking its premise that the planes didn't cause the WTC collapse. Instead, it's claimed that missiles were fired into the towers, then the footage was faked with planes superimposed by hologram.

We know it's rubbish because: well, the fact that billions of people watched the attacks live around the world and tens of thousands saw them live in and around Manhattan..?
