My 16 year old daughter is a shooter... and has been since she was nine years old... Here is a picture when she was 12 getting used to big bore recoil (.58 cal.), while chronographing some loads through a repro 1864 J.P. Murray Confederate Carbine, at a 100 yard target. This was all in preparation for an Internet shooting competition, the ISSO, (International Snider Shoot Off) her challenge was against the then champion, in Liege Belgium. --Oldyoti "The NRA, behind the scenes, has brokered, compromised, and then endorsed every major anti Second Amendment federal law passed for the last 30 years..." Anyone who wants to is welcome to come find out. JT-- your daughter is awesome!!!!! We regularly take our kids out target practicing in the swamp here. Our son just turned 8, but last year for his birthday we got him a Henry .22 bolt action single shot & he's a crack shot! He also likes shooting the antique Colt & daddy's Glock. Our girl is 18 & she prefers the Glock for a handgun. Hubby's Glock is a first edition & the envy of a couple different gun shop owners. She also likes the 30/40 Craig.

http://fanzone50.com/Tales/Boadicea1.htmlAt first glance, it seems one of history's little ironies that this statue should be found in London, of a women who more than 2000 years ago led an army that laid siege to and practically destroyed this very city. Not so strange, however, when we consider that she was not fighting her fellow countrymen, but was leading a revolt against the Roman invaders. Boadicea Haranguing the Britons by H.C. Selous (c. 1840) (her ill-fated daughters at her feet) A lot of what we think we know about Boadicea is legend. Plain and simple. We do not know when or where she was born, who her parents were or even exactly where she came from. We don't know her correct name, this is merely the version I have settled on here. We also don't know how and when she died, or where she was buried. Considering what we do know, the common assumption that she committed suicide is probably not far off the mark. The only physical description we have comes from Dio Cassius, a Roman senator who was also an enthusiastic chronicler. Alas, is it doubtful that he ever saw Boudicea with his own eyes as he gives her an appearance commonly ascribed to Celtic women of the time ... tall, strong boned, scowling creatures with long red hair ... the description of her voice as being notably harsh and unlovely is especially suspect in light of the fact that unlovely, "mannish" attributes are often ascribed to women who forget "their place" in male-dominated societies (Mrs. Thatcher is a recent example of this). One must keep in mind that the perspective of the Roman chroniclers was from the point of a totally male-dominated society, where a woman was the property of her male relatives, from birth until death. This, by the way, was an alien concept in traditionally matriarchal Celtic society. Boadicea was certainly of royal birth; this we know from the writings of Tacitus (see link at end of last page), the Roman historian who was her contemporary (and from whose terse style of writing we get the word 'taciturn'). She lived in the middle of the first century AD, when Britain was overrun with Roman invaders. Somewhere in what today is called East Anglia. She was the mother of two daughters (there might have been other children--history does not tell us), the widow of the Iceni King Prasutagus who, upon his death, had left half of his kingdom (and considerable riches) to the Roman emperor, the other half to his daughters (thus Boadicea became the regent for her young children). A common practise among nobles of his day -- placate the crown while protecting your heirs. Alas, the local representative of the emperor, namely, Procurator Catus Decianus, chief financial minister of the British provices and an especially odious person, was not satisfied with this arrangement and had his troups seize not only the estate of the late king but also those of other Iceni nobles. They went about this is an especially inhumane and brutal manner, it is recorded history that Boudicea was publicly flogged and her two young daughters, heiresses to their father's legacy, were raped. Even Tacitus was moved to condem the vicious acts of his countrymen in his writings. Acts clearly devised to break the proud Iceni spirit. Was it perhaps because the Iceni were especially freedom-loving and had opposed Roman rule wherever possible? The chroniclers tell us not. But rather than break their spirits, these excesses of brutality only rallied the people behind their Queen and against the invaders. The chroniclers tell of three great speeches that Boadicea made to call her people to arms. While there is undoubtedly truth in this, they go on to put words into her mouth. There are no eyewitness accounts handed down to us, so let it suffice to know that she accomplished what no-one had tried before ... not only her own but other tribes as well followed her against the Romans. It might be of interest to note that according to the Roman chroniclers, women fighting side by side with their men was not at all uncommon in the Britain of that time. But Boadicea not merely fought alongside the men, she led them into battle ... an army of 120,000

a great gun for a woman is a sub machine gun of any kind.i think women being the ones who do the things were sub machin guns are used is great.in russia they had 300 woman snipers and only 500 some made it back. and its hard for alot of these girls to hold a asshault rifle.course theres always those really buff girls.like a freind of mine named mel who died giving birth to twins who could hold an m60 belt fed heavy machin gun and fire 400 rounds into a large target all hitting within the middle

Thanks Hillbilly... she is a pretty special young lady... Here she is again, shooting from the bench in the "best on bull" leg of the competition at 50 yards, shooting the vintage 1867 MK II* slow twist .577 Snider-Enfield, she adopted as her own from my collection... She is petting the comb of the butt stock in the picture saying, "Nice little Snidey"... The rifle performed quite well for her that day. Here is the 5 round target she shot on bull ... This is a standard 100 yard rifle target... the black is 8" diameter with a 1" orange bulls eye... not bad for a 12 year old squeezing the trigger of a 141 year old rifle that kicks like a mule... The round she was shooting is the .577 Snider-Enfield. Here it is compared to a standard .223 NATO round, and a penny... --Oldyoti "What spectacle can be more edifying or more seasonable, than that of Liberty and Learning, each leaning on the other for their mutual and surest support?" ~James Madison

Thanks, and yes there has been a skipped generation as far as firearms goes... it seems the kids who grew up in the 70s and 80s lost out due to the anti-gun hysteria promoted after we "lost" the Vietnam war. Anyway the rifle you're describing is the US military issue arm from 1892-1903... in caliber 30/40 the infamous and still formidable 30/40 "Krag"-Jorgensen... I have a couple of them, including the one my father gave me as my first big game hunting rifle on my 14th birthday back in 1961. It has the smoothest action of any bolt action rifle ever made, though not the strongest due to the single locking forward lug on the bolt, instead of two. Yet, it is more than strong enough with the stock 30/40 ammo, which is still available. It is very accurate and more than adequate for virtually any game found in North America. The 577 Snider however, well.... you have to load your own... only a few companies in the world supply components for it... there are literally thousands of accurate and powerful old 19th century cartridge rifles that cannot be used because there is no longer ammo made for them... click on the oldyoti link below, to see what I do... Thank you very much for the info on the Krag.... We still have the smelting equipment for it wrapped tightly by the great uncle who gave it to my hubby. The package says, "Open only in case of Civil Unrest or Martial Law" across the front. It's the one I plan on taking with me because of the smelting equipment (jeweler here & smelting is FUN!). In my previous post I stated that was the only other weapon I've shot & that's incorrect---I meant a rifle of any sort. We have a large collection of nice pistols. Yep. It did kinda skip a generation. Oh & I'm thoroughly impressed!!! I'm gonna have to think of some smart sounding smelting questions. And prolly learn the correct lingo now as well.

Sounds like uncle, left you with the necessary equipment to cast bullets... at the very least. That would include a lead pot, a ladle, and a bullet mold... this would be the bullet casting equipment.
In order to get everything together to turn empty cartridge cases into loaded ready to use cartridges, requires several other steps however... You must check and see if uncle left you instructions... If not I can help you with what he has left you...
Suffice it to say, if you have all of the equipment necessary... you cast your own bullets... preferably with copper gas checks for the Krag... with a reloading press and the proper reloading dies, you can then reload it with the proper powder charge, primer, and seat your newly cast bullets for less than $.07 a round, and with the load pressures that the 30/40 works at, each case is good for 20 reloads before it would have to be replaced...
Anyway, I cast and reload 12 obsolete calibers, and 4 that are still active. It is time well spent around the loading press with the family, or with Alex on the speaker... saving about a dollar a round over the cost of store bought ammo for the active calibers, and priceless for being able to load and shoot the obsolete "Old Boomers". Also the consistency of your loaded rounds are controlled by you to the point that the accuracy, and velocity is astoundingly consistent, because of the accuracy you will naturally use in every step of the process... making them much better than the off the shelf stuff.

Very cool there JT. I'll have to wait for hubby to get home ..... the stuff has been wrapped for at least 40 years & I'm not digging through it without his blessings. I knew there was a particular word for it, but have been a jeweler for many a year now & the jewelry word for melting metals is smelting. Couldn't think past "smelt". LOL! I enjoy both smelting & welding .925, .999 (challenging!), 14k, & 18k. Lead will be different, but a fun challenge. I wish he'd get home already... I want to rip the package open & see what all the old uncle left us!!!! Again, thank you for the info. And I've bookmarked your site.

Well it seems there's a lot of talk in Congress about martial law... I don't think we will be much closer to it without it happening full blown. So the message your hubby's uncle left on the package is pretty much a happening deal as we speak...
In any case let me know what all you find when you open it.

Well, she never claimed having a problem with hers... course I suppose she actually used it... I think you would have had less problem with yours had you used it more often... You see rust can only accumulate on the surfaces that see very little action or are poorly lubed... of course... I expect that rust would be a problem in your case... imho JTCoyoté "The course of history shows that as a government grows, liberty decreases." ~Thomas Jefferson
