WTF? Corker and Merkley try to neutralize Ron Paul's Audit The Fed Bill

AUDIT THE FED OPPONENTS ARE ATTACKING

A Democrat and a Republican have introduced a bill that would essentially kill Ron Paul's Audit the fed Bill.  This is not a partisan issue. There are friends and enemies on both sides of the aisle.  The measure introduced today would still call for an audit but very restricted.  Like counting the cash in the register and not looking at the books.

Earlier today, Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Bob Corker (R-TN) introduced "The Federal Reserve Accountability Act," an attempt to kill HR 1207/S 604 by passing a bill that prevents a full audit and full transparency from America's secretive central bank.
 
While language in this bill would permit a limited audit of the Fed's actions in the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) and similar high profile bailouts, it would not allow an audit to review the Fed's inflation of the money supply or its agreements with foreign central banks, among other shortcomings.
 
Additionally, the names of the institutions who received the funds would not be available until one year after each "emergency" program ended, and you know how quickly the federal government likes to end programs.

We've seen it time and time again in recent months.
 
Now, this is how they will fight back -- by having establishment senators who oppose a full audit the Fed, proposing watered down compromises in an attempt to sabotage our real goal.
 
We knew this moment would come.  Now you and I must fight back.
 
Seventy-five percent of the American people, over two thirds of the House of Representatives, and over a quarter of the Senate support Ron Paul's Audit the Fed legislation.
 
With those historic levels of support, there is no excuse for settling for anthing less than a full Audit the Fed bill.  Anything less is merely an attempt to stop our efforts as we get closer to passage of a real bill.
 
The freedom movement will not back down on requiring transparency and accountability from an institution that has helped to destroy our economy.  This is another test of our strength and will.
 
Let's finish what we've started.  Take action to stop this dangerous attempt to stop the real Audit the Fed bill TODAY!

Thanks a lot Senator Bob Corker for not listening again. The people of Tennessee and the United States are backing Ron Paul's "audit the fed" bill so much so that the legislation has 303 co-sponsors, including more than 100 Democrats. The matching Senate bill already has 30 sponsors but why would you listen to "we the people" anyway? Your attempt to sidetrack us by introducing your watered down impotent bill "The Federal Reserve Accountability Act" suggest that you are a bought and paid for Washington Politician! The IRS wants to know what Joe Public does with every penny of our income while you sit in your ivory towers making laws to hide all your buddies financial decisions. Yes, you know, all your buddies from the committees you've worked with, like-

the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs,

the Subcommittee on Financial Institutions,

the Subcommittee on Security and International Trade and Finance,

and the Subcommittee on Securities, Insurance and Investment.

I will narrow it down to only one question Bob. What would be wrong with just co-sponsoring the S604 bill that calls for a full audit of the Federal Reserve system? The Fed doesn't want anyone to know what they own:

"In part, this decline in value is because two other pieces of the Bear Stearns collateral -- Extended Stay Hotels, and the GrandStay Residential Suites Hotels in Oxnard, California -- have sought court bankruptcy protection.

Extended Stay owes the Fed almost $900 million, consisting of $153 million in commercial mortgage-backed securities and $744 million in junior mezzanine debt, while GrandStay won Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection with a bit under $10 million in debt.

Joseph Sholder, the Santa Barbara lawyer acting for GrandStay, was startled to discover that the lender who had tried to take control of the property was the Federal Reserve.

Court papers simply identified GrandStay's creditor as Maiden Lane Commercial Mortgage Bank Securities Trust-2008.

The Fed created a special vehicle called Maiden Lane to hold the assets on its balance sheet pledged against the Bear loan. Maiden Lane is the name of the lower Manhattan street behind the New York Fed's building.

However, Sholder said that on reflection, he really should not be so surprised by the news of the Fed's involvement.

This is what I got back from Corker.

Thank you for contacting my office regarding S. 604, the Federal Reserve Sunshine Act. Your input is important to me, and I appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts.

I understand the importance of having a strong monetary policy with appropriate oversight measures, particularly during these difficult economic times.  As you know, S. 604 would remove all existing audit restrictions and confidentiality restrictions, and require the GAO to perform an audit of the Fed. In its current form, I cannot support this legislation because I fear it will politicize the Fed's role in crafting unbiased and non-partisan monetary policy.

While I am concerned about preserving the independence of the Fed, I agree that oversight is necessary. That is why I supported legislation earlier this year that gave the Government Accountability Office (GAO) the authority to audit activities of the Federal Reserve Board with regard to the emergency actions it has taken to address the current financial crisis. You should also know that despite being created as an independent agency, the Federal Reserve is accountable to the United States Congress. Reports, audits, and hearings are required of the Federal Reserve several times per year. As a member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, I look forward to reviewing the policies set and actions taken by the Fed, and the effects they are having on our financial system.
