Report: Pentagon’s burn weapon could end up in police hands http://rawstory.com/2009/09/report-pentagons-burn-weapon-could-end-up-in-police-hands/By Daniel Tencer Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 -- 8:34 pm A powerful hand-held weapon being developed by the Pentagon could end up in police hands, says a report in a UK science journal. The Pentagon's Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate has been developing the Thermal Laser System since 2005, with the purpose of developing a weapon that could disperse crowds or incapacitate individuals by causing them to experience burning sensations in their skin. According to NewScientist magazine, the weapon has evolved into a rifle-mounted instrument, and there are plans for a hand-held model that could be used by police forces. News of the possibility that police departments could obtain the burn weapon will likely concern civil-liberties advocates, who have been watching with alarm as the Taser conducted-energy weapon has gone into regular use in police forces across the United States. As NewScientist notes, the weapon is still in the testing phase and kinks have yet to be worked out. Story continues below... The Gizmag blog reported last week that "the infrared [rays] of the Thermal Laser System can be blocked by clothing – fine if you’re trying to subdue a group of nudists, but problematic otherwise." NewScientist reports: [T]ests at the Air Force Research Laboratory's human effectiveness lab have established that the skin heating effect causes no permanent damage - suggesting it may have "military utility". The tests also highlighted areas in need of improvement before troops can use it, says lab manager Semih Kumru - though what those features are has not been revealed. The proposed system is rifle mounted, with a sight above it and a visible low-power laser beam that the soldier uses to aim the invisible infrared laser. The solid-state laser system is battery-powered, and could become hand-held "in the near future"... "I'd like to know why they want another advanced pain compliance weapon like this," says Steve Wright, non-lethal weapons analyst at Leeds Metropolitan University in the UK. "Persuading by pain rather than brain - through conversation - has led to push-button torture in the past. If it leaves no mark on the skin how will anyone prove it's been abused?"

Having worked for and with some of those neanderthals, there is NO WAY I would feel comfortable if they had that in hand. The pepper-ball guns, tasers, all too much for those punks with badges. The antics I've witnessed were enough to turn my stomach, and all they need is a hand held micraowave cannon they can prank people with from a mile away....yeahhhhhhhhhh. Good call government, thats using out moneies the way we envision.

A device like this is a torture device. How is simulating burning any different than simulating drowning? I would be shocked if it didn't cause permanent damage, either physical or mental.

What I think we need to do is start pushing for state by state bans on directed energy weapons.
Once a couple of states preemptively ban these things the rest will fall in line. Then if the feds come in and use them they can be arrested.
State officials would have a hard time voting against a ban on Weapons of Mass Torture.

http://www.iqpc.com/ShowEvent.aspx?id=151250&langtype=1033DIRECTED ENERGY WEAPONS (DEW) AND TARGETED INDIVIDUALS (TI’s) Great leaps in technological advancement have always started with the business of warfare; it is simply the nature of man. The Militaries of the world, especially the U.S., have reportedly kept a great knowledge advantage, at least a decade or more ahead of general civilian understanding. When this Advanced Technology is deployed into the civilian realm, great Human Rights violations inevitably occur. An unfortunate situation has resulted which I hope will intrigue you - civilian casualties in a silent, covert war – the targeting of specific individuals by government & contract agencies utilizing directed energy weapons (DEW). We Targeted Individuals (TI’s) can be found all around the world, but are usually to be found, more often than not, near US intelligence & military sites. Here in California, the greatest concentration of victims within the United States, the perpetrators are the government agencies and their hired contractor & subcontractor lap dogs. http://www.geocities.com/adrian9999999999/DEWandTI.html

Portable pain weapon may end up in police hands30 September 2009 by Paul Marks http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20427286.100-portable-pain-weapon-may-end-up-in-police-hands.htmlTHE Pentagon's efforts to develop a beam weapon that can deter an adversary by causing a burning sensation on their skin has taken a step forward with the development of a small, potentially hand-held, version. The weapon, which is claimed to cause no permanent harm, could also end up being used by police to control civilians. The idea of the weapon is to "create a heating sensation that repels individual adversaries", according to the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate (JNLWD) in Quantico, Virginia, which develops less-lethal weapons for the US military and coastguard. Tests with a rifle-mounted infrared laser, carried out at a US air force lab near Dayton, Ohio, have determined a combination of laser pulse power and wavelength that causes an alarming, hot sensation on the skin, but which stops short of causing a burn, says JNLWD project engineer Wesley Burgei. "We have established the minimum irradiance to cause a sensation and have characterised where thermal injury begins," he says. "But the exact operating irradiance which balances a useful military effect with a conservative margin of safety has not been nailed down yet." That's something that will have to be done before the weapon is deployed, as too powerful a laser beam could permanently blind someone if fired at their eyes. Weapons that do this are banned under the UN Protocol on Blinding Laser Weapons. Burgei says it is possible to create a beam that will affect the skin without damaging the cornea, and do so at a wavelength that does not penetrate to the retina "and would therefore be retina safe". Pentagon researchers say they can create a beam that will affect skin without damaging the cornea The JNLWD says that tests at the Air Force Research Laboratory's human effectiveness lab have established that the skin heating effect causes no permanent damage - suggesting it may have "military utility". The tests also highlighted areas in need of improvement before troops can use it, says lab manager Semih Kumru - though what those features are has not been revealed. The proposed system is rifle mounted, with a sight above it and a visible low-power laser beam that the soldier uses to aim the invisible infrared laser. The solid-state laser system is battery-powered, and could become hand-held "in the near future", Burgei says. The weapon, which has been evolving since 2005, is officially known at the Pentagon as the Thermal Laser System. The US National Institute of Justice, which is also funding the weapon's development in the hope that it may prove useful for the police, refers to it as the IR-Lesslethal device. The Pentagon already has a large crowd control weapon called the Active Denial System that can heat whole groups of people, causing them to flee. It uses a flat-plate antenna mounted on a truck or aircraft to aim a 2-metre-wide microwave beam at the crowd. Like all supposedly non-lethal weapons that could be used to control civilians, the Pentagon's new portable weapon is raising concerns. "I'd like to know why they want another advanced pain compliance weapon like this," says Steve Wright, non-lethal weapons analyst at Leeds Metropolitan University in the UK. "Persuading by pain rather than brain - through conversation - has led to push-button torture in the past. Keep in mind those 'microwave weapons' use microwaves. What happens when you put metal or tin foil in a Microwave? I do believe the waves cannot penetrate it... Tin Foil hats for all!!

Who knows the effect of metal buttons, pacemakers, etc. I mean grandma's may instantly die (none are used in testing) and babies may just spontaneously burst into flames (also none are used in testing, but most definitely will be hit in actual deployments of this SWMT).

They already do this. Just let your neighbours make it all up, and if they know the right people, microwaving your home for the rest of your life is a real threat.
There must be so many murderers in society, going round doing these sorts of things, to people they hate for some reason. The murderers in the police must have so many false reports.

The play on words, the ol spin, to the uniformed. NON LETHAL..It conjurs up images to the braindead of a simple and efective means of rousting rabble rousers, deomonstrators, truthers, etc. They have no effect, OK, have the inventors and the MIC that developed them bring in their wives and kids, grandchildren, pregnant daughters, and line them up, test each NON LETHAL weapon on them, leave their cell phones and metal buckles, buttons, pacemakers, platinum braces, tooth inserts, guys who have any metal internaly after injury, people with heart conditions or other physical ailments. I wonder how many billions they have spent on this torture device. The physco cops are not having enough fun with the tazers. Police seeking empployment , must be sadistical. they won't say it, but they profile them. YA, this is tyrany at its finest. It used to be a whip, a cat of nine tails thrashed into the back of the peons, high tech has come a long way, not lethal huh?

About a year ago, I was doing some food in my mums microwave and the food wasn't cooking, I had it in there twice as long as needed but nothing happened ... Then as I was getting the food out the microwave I started feeling really weird. I then panicked, closed the oven door and ran into a different room and the weird feeling wore off. My guess is some of the radiation was leaking out of it... Could of killed me. Ever since then I stopped eating microwaved food.

I was just being silly - but they may find use of these weapons, in the end when they are dead and buried, will result in a much hotter environment than microwaves can produce..

Hi MSR. It sounds like you have been through a true shiitestorm. You are not alone, and the regime will continue its abomination. You have felt the sting of tyrany, you are in good company in this site. We are not in their good books, therfor we remain vigilant to avoid their traps, and as you stated if they want of peice of you they will get it. StarTrek phasers were rarely used for anything other than STUN. I would Love to do a psychological study on these criminals who invent such weapons of cruelty. I bet so many of them have histories of torturing animals and small children, bedwetting, and hours spent playing electronic games of death. This is so sick it defies wasting posttime on it. So why did I post? To acknowledge that I would hope that the inventor dies as a result of experiencing his own device used on him!!!!

I guess atomic bombs, microwave ovens, cell phones, etc. aren't enough radiation for us. Let's kick it up a notch so that if you are subdued more than 3 times a year you'll die from radiation poisoning. That is, if you didn't have any medical x-rays taken that year, then it'll be 2 times.
