A 14-year-old schoolgirl today died shortly after being given the new cervical cancer vaccine. The teenager collapsed at her school in Coventry after receiving the jab as part of a national immunisation programme. She was taken to hospital but doctors were unable to save her. Three of her classmates also suffered possible side-effects after being injected with Cervavix, which protects against human papillomavirus (HPV), this afternoon. None of the other girls needed hospital treatment. Health officials have impounded the batch of vaccine so further tests can be carried out. The death is believed to be the first linked to the jab since a nationwide vaccination programme began this month.
The girl's parents have been informed of her death. The health authority has also contacted the parents of other children at the school. Dr Caron Grainger, Joint Director of Public Health for NHS Coventry and Coventry City, said: 'A 14-year-old girl was taken ill at a school in Coventry and was taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire where she later sadly died.

'Our sympathies are with the girl's family and friends at this difficult time.

Some stocks of the cervical cancer vaccine being used in NI have been withdrawn after the death of a girl, the NI chief medical officer has said.

The 14-year old took ill in school in England after receiving the HPV vaccine and later died.

Dr Michael McBride said "no link can be made between the death and the vaccine until all the facts are known and a post-mortem takes place".

"I would urge parents and children not to panic," said Dr McBride.

"The removal of this particular batch of the vaccine is purely a precautionary measure while the tragic death in England is being fully investigated."

"Some stocks of the same batch of the Cervarix vaccine were issued to Trust pharmacies in Northern Ireland and we have requested Trusts to quarantine this batch.

"School nurses and GPs have been informed not to use this particular batch until the results of testing are known."

Natalie Morton died in hospital on Monday after receiving the Cervarix jab at the Blue Coat Church of England School in Coventry.

Headteacher Dr Julie Roberts paid tribute to her as a "happy easy-going child who worked hard".

Post-mortem tests into the exact cause are expected to be held on Tuesday.

The routine HPV vaccination programme was introduced for girls aged 12-13 years (school year 9) in September 2008.

The human papillomavirus (HPV), is found in most women who have developed cervical cancer.

It is spread from one person to another during sexual activity.

There are over 100 types of HPV but only 13 of these are known to cause cervical cancer.

The HPV vaccine will protect against types 16 and 18 which are the two most common types causing cervical cancer.

LONDON (Reuters) - GlaxoSmithKline's cervical cancer vaccine Cervarix probably did not cause the death of a teenager shortly after she was given the drug, a health official said Tuesday.

"I think it is unlikely that will be the case," said Dr Caron Grainger, joint director of public health in the area where the 14-year-old girl died, when asked about the possibility of any connection between the death and Cervarix.

News of the death came shortly before a possible decision by U.S. health regulators on whether to approve Cervarix for sale in the United States.

"I think once we get into the investigation ... we may discover there is another cause of her death," Grainger told the BBC.

"The message for parents at this moment in time and for young girls receiving this vaccine is that you should go ahead with the vaccination," said Grainger, who works for the NHS in Coventry.

Police are treating the girl's death as "unexplained" and said a post-mortem was taking place Tuesday.

The teenager, named by a police source as Natalie Morton, fell ill Monday after being vaccinated at her school under a national immunisation program against the sexually-transmitted human papilloma virus (HPV).

NO PLANS TO HALT PROGRAM 

The Department of Health said there were no plans to halt the program under which more than 1.4 million doses of Cervarix have been administered. "The vaccine has a strong safety record so precautionary measures are focussed on the batch," it said in a statement.

Grainger said only about 2,000 people had suffered any adverse reactions to the immunisation program and that these were mostly minor. GlaxoSmithKline said Monday it was working with regulators to understand the case better.

Sudden teenage deaths, in general, are not unknown. "Unfortunately, some young people do die suddenly for a variety of reasons, including cardiac causes. Sometimes they have been entirely well before their death," said Dr David Elliman of London's Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

A small number of other girls at the Blue Coat Church of England School reported suffering from dizziness and nausea but were not admitted to hospital, health officials said.

The drug is given in three shots over six months.

The program to vaccinate girls aged 12 to 13 began in September 2008. Cervical cancer is the 12th most common women's cancer in Britain, killing more than 1,000 women each year.

Should Cervarix gain U.S. approval it would compete with Merck's Gardasil, which has been on the U.S. market since 2006 and had sales of $268 million (167.7 million pounds) in the second quarter.

GlaxoSmithKline won support for its cervical cancer vaccine from an advisory panel to Japan's Health Ministry Tuesday, putting it on track to be the first company to offer such a vaccine in the world's second-biggest drug market.

GlaxoSmithKline shares were trading 0.4 percent lower in London at 1:23 p.m., down slightly more than the broader market. (Editing by David Stamp)

The country has withdrawn tens of thousands of doses of Gardasil after the hospitalization of two teenage girls, reinforcing critics’ doubts about the safety of the vaccine.

Two teenage girls from the eastern Valencia region reportedly fell ill on Feb. 6 just hours after receiving the Gardasil vaccine, and they were hospitalized. One of the girls was released from intensive care this weekend, while the other remains there, according to a government statement. The girls, who received shots from the same batch of Gardasil, are in stable condition.

Gardasil is a vaccine used to prevent human papillomavirus, or HPV, which can cause cervical cancer.

AFP reports that both girls were vaccinated last weekend as part of a government vaccination program that is targeting adolescents.

Spain’s health ministry said that Gardasil will continue to be administered but that one batch of the vaccine—batch NH52670—has been recalled. About 76,000 vaccines from the affected batch have already been distributed throughout Spain, but chemists have been instructed to halt sales.

Reuters reports that Sanofi Pasteur MSD, the Sanofi-Merck partnership that sells the vaccine in Europe, has stated that it is investigating the incident, but that an adverse event following the shot did not necessarily mean that Gardasil had caused it.

Other details about the incident, including the girls’ names and the extent of their illnesses, have not yet been released.

Gardasil has been proven successful in preventing HPV, and thus cervical cancer, but a number of doctors, parents and medical experts have questioned the vaccine’s safety since the FDA approved it in 2006.

Despite reports of adverse reactions, including paralysis and even death, the vaccine continues to be marketed successfully to teenage girls. The FDA, after reviewing 9,700 cases of reported health problems following the injection, said the most serious health problems did not appear to be related to the vaccine.

The vaccine’s safety will most likely continue to be questioned as the government continues to recommend Gardasil for teenage girls. One of the researchers who helped develop the drug, Dr. Diane Harper, has been vocal in her concern that a push by several states and pharmaceutical company Merck to make the vaccine mandatory is happening far too fast, before clinical trials reveal any possible risks.

Additionally, the National Vaccine Information Center, a vaccine safety watchdog group, continues to issue periodic reports questioning Gardasil’s safety.

Other critics worry that Gardasil is targeting the wrong age group altogether, saying that middle-school-aged girls who receive the vaccine will be no more than 18 when they pass its five-year window of proven effectiveness. Furthermore, many young women’s immune systems clear the virus within one to two years of contracting it. And when detected early, HPV can be treated and rarely leads to cancer.

Merck recently sought approval to market Gardasil to males between 9 and 26. HPV causes some cancers in males.

Another schoolgirl at Blue Coat Church of England School needed an ambulance after having the cervical cancer jab, it emerged last night.

The 15-year-old pupil became cold, weak and dizzy less than an hour after the vaccine and only a short time after schoolmate Natalie Morton became fatally ill. Her symptoms were so severe that paramedics did emergency blood tests and an ECG scan in a back room at the school, the girl's mother said.

The teenager refused to go to hospital because of a phobia of ambulances so her mother collected her from school on Monday. The girl remains ill with chronic chest and back aches and loss of appetite.

Her twin sister also had the vaccine on Monday but suffered only a sore arm and tiredness. Neither have any allergies.

Last night the mother criticised Blue Coat School for failing to contact her and check on her daughter's condition. NHS Direct advised that she monitor her daughter and wake her during the night to check her responsiveness.

The mother, who has five children including twins, told the Daily Mail: 'She was and still is really quite ill. I don't know what caused it but she went to school perfectly healthy and became sick soon after the vaccine.

'Now she's completely out of sorts.

Paramedics said she might have been low on blood sugar because she hadn't eaten lunch. But that's not true - she did have lunch on Monday.

'It's a very anxious time. My daughter knew Natalie from seeing her around school and she's petrified that whatever killed Natalie might have got to her too.

'I'm angry that the school sought emergency medical help but haven't followed it up at all. What happened is tragic for Natalie but where is the help in place for the girls who suffered side effects? The school could face further tragedy unless they look after the victims of what seem to be horrendous symptoms from this cervical cancer vaccine.'

GSK and Cervarix - is AS04 a double edged sword?

LONDON, UK----19 December 2007----ExpertREACT.

Earlier this week it was announced that Cervarix, GlaxoSmithKline’s HPV bivalent vaccine, would be delayed in reaching the key US market due to issuance of an FDA complete response letter. The news gives a lengthy first-mover advantage to rival Merck’s Gardasil (quadrivalent vaccine), which was FDA approved in June 2006 and has already recorded sales of over $1bn by the end of Q3, 2007. Looking forward VacZine Analytics discusses this event and how it may form an important case study with regard to the caution of US regulators to new vaccine adjuvant systems.

On the 17th December the US FDA issued a complete response letter to GSK regarding its submission of Cervarix, a recombinant vaccine containing human papillomavirus vaccine types 16 and 18. The vaccine also contains the novel adjuvant AS04 which is a combination of standard aluminium hydroxide and the new component, monophospholipid A (MPL). MPL is a derivative of the lipid A molecule found in gram-negative bacteria and is considered one of the most potent immune system stimulants known.

GSK fully acquired the MPL adjuvant from Corixa in April 2005 after previously collaborating with the Seattle based company on Bexxar (Tositumomab) – the monoclonal antibody for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other cancer vaccine immunotherapy programs.

A significant number of programs within GSK’s vaccine R&D pipeline now contain the MPL adjuvant (estimated >15). In some cases MPL is coupled with QS21 another novel adjuvant derived from a variety of tree bark and developed by Massachusetts based Antigenics. Notable programs containing MPL in the late stages of development are Mosquarix and Simplirix – the candidate vaccines for malaria and herpes simplex virus (HSV) respectively. In previous research VacZine Analytics has drawn attention to the enthusiasm of the vaccine industry to acquire and then commercialize new adjuvant systems (ExpertREACT – 19 November 2007: ).

Although GSK has not given exact details regarding the FDA feedback on Cervarix, it is widely believed that one major concern of the FDA might be the novel AS04 adjuvant system.

AS04 has never been approved in the US but has previously been available in another GSK product, Fendrix (HBV vaccine) that was approved in the EU in 2005. The FDA’s decision is a setback because GSK won EU approval of Cervarix in September of this year, is testing the product for the Japanese market and applying for WHO prequalification status. During the clinical development of Cervarix, no significant safety signals were observed although it is noteworthy that a far higher number (est 13 million doses) of Merck’s Gardasil have already been administered to young females forming a large “real use” safety database.

Because GSK lag behind Merck & Co in the US market for HPV vaccines the company has made great efforts to communicate the advantages of AS04 in Cervarix, which to many has a less favourable profile because of its bivalent rather than quadrivalent antigen format. In company presentations GSK has put forward the “stronger and longer” message when describing the antibody response induced by the vaccine. This response may lessen the need for boosting later in life and allow the company to further develop a cost-saving argument. Moreover, according to preliminary data in the HPV-008 study, GSK state that AS04 might also enhance cross-protection of Cervarix against other oncogenic HPV types namely, HPV-31, 45 and 52. Cross-protection might be another potential avenue of product differentiation, again provided to some extent by AS04.

With hindsight it is easy to put forward the argument that the first significant US launch with AS04 should have been an elderly vaccine (>65yrs) where long-term safety concerns are not as critical as those in young adolescent women prior to childbearing. Furthermore, adolescents are increasingly targetted to receiving more vaccinations such as those for meningitis and pertussis boosters. This dynamic might draw attention to the lack of significant concomitant administration data provided so far with GSK’s Cervarix.

Aside from the potential concerns regarding the adjuvant system in Cervarix, other observers have drawn attention to the interim analysis of the pivotal Phase III PATRICIA study. With Gardisil Merck & Co have demonstrated vaccine efficacy against HPV 16 and 18 individually whereas GSK did not show statistical significance of Cervarix against HPV 18 alone due to a low event number (CIN lesions) in the study to date.

Regardless of the FDA’s exact reasons for delaying Cervarix, this event is not only an issue for GSK but also a signal to all manufacturers. Testing novel adjuvant systems for the US market will require a safe and steady approach.

United States Concern for Europe with regards to Cervarix HPV vaccine.

(brackets my emphasis)

Reports from around the world in regards to the HPV vaccines concern us greatly in the United States.  Many of us have friends and family in Europe.  We do not want to see any harm come to any citizen because of this kinship.  That is why we felt it to be of paramount importance to add this information about the Cervarix © vaccine.
  
(1)  European Public Assessment Report
   1.1  QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE COMPOSITION (page 2, title 2)
“adsorbed on aluminium hydroxide, hydrated (Al(OH)3), L1 protein in the form of non-infectious virus-like particles (VLPs) produced by recombinant DNA technology using a Baculovirus expression system which uses Hi-5 Rix4446 cells derived from Trichoplusia ni.”
      1. Contains 0.5 mg aluminum hydroxide
2.  Trichoplusia ni (Hubner, 1800 – 1803) is nothing more than a Cabbage Looper Moth.  The DNA from this moth is being used in the construction of the L1 protein. There have been no studies conducted in regards to effects of insect DNA interaction with human DNA mentioned in this report.

2.1 Page 14, paragraph 4 - As with any vaccine, a protective immune response may not be elicited in all vaccinees.  (It is unknown what percentage of vaccinees are protected.)
Page 14, Effects on Fertility - Fertility was not affected in female rats given double the clinical dose of CERVARIX by intramuscular administration 30 days prior to mating.
Page 15 and 16, Genotoxicity - The genotoxic potential of CERVARIX has not been investigated. The adjuvant substance MPL has been tested for genotoxicity in a series of in vitro assays (bacterial mutation and chromosomal aberration) and an in vivo rat micronucleus test. Under the condition of these assays, MPL did not cause genetic damage.

Carcinogenicity - The carcinogenic potential of CERVARIX has not been investigated.
Ability to perform tasks that require judgment, motor or cognitive skills - No studies on the effects on the ability to drive or use machines have been performed.

2.2  (Adverse events not documented in a concise, detailed table format.  Unable to determine percentage of participants affected with an adverse reaction to this vaccine.  Potential population numbers as to this issue is not attainable making this vaccine a potential safety issue.)

(3) MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) - Summary of UK Safety Experience
3.1 – March 2009. Total number of reports received: 1,340.
    Total number of suspected reactions: 2,891 (reports received between April 14, 2008 and March 4, 2009.)  [PDF. Attached]

1. Injection-site reactions: Total reactions – 418; Total reports – 312. These may occur at a frequency of more than 1 in 10 persons vaccinated.

2. Allergic reactions (including skin reactions not directly related to an injection-site reaction):
Total reactions – 259; Total reports – 156.  These may occur at a frequency between 1 in 10 persons (for non-serious types of allergic reactions such as rash and itching) to less than 1 in 10,000 persons vaccinated.

3. ‘Psychogenic’ events: Total reactions – 851; Total reports – 330.  Such events can be associated with a wide range of temporary signs and symptoms including loss of consciousness, vision disturbance, injury, limb jerking  (often misinterpreted as seizure/convulsion), limb numbness or tingling, difficulty in breathing, hyperventilation, etc.

4. “Other recognized” reactions: Total reactions – 1125; Total reports – 626. This section includes other events recognized to be side-effects of Cervarix vaccine.

5. Suspected adverse reactions not currently recognized:
Total reactions – 238; Total reports – 153. These suspected ADRs are not currently recognized as side effects of Cervarix vaccine.

3.2 – May 2009. Total number of reports received:
1,710, total number of suspected reactions: 3,774 (reports received between April 14, 2008 and May 21, 2009.)  [PDF. Attached]

It is important that you refer to the documents attached to get a comprehensive overview of all the symptoms they consider to be ‘Psychogenic’, ‘Other recognized’ and Suspected events.  All reactions stated in these reports are the same reactions that are being reported in the United States.

MAIN FACTS:

-CERVARIX was shown to be 93 percent efficacious in the prevention of cervical pre-cancers (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 2+/ CIN 2+ or adenocarcinoma in situ) associated with HPV 16 or 18, in women without evidence of current infection with, or prior exposure to, the same HPV type at the time of vaccination.

-The majority (approximately 75 percent) of cervical cancers in North America are caused by HPV types 16 and 18.

-CERVARIX does not protect against disease caused by all HPV types.

-Approximately 100 types of HPV have been identified to date and, of these, approximately 15 virus types are known to cause cervical cancer.

-The FDA's approval of CERVARIX was based on data from clinical trials in more than 30 countries involving a diverse population of nearly 30,000 girls and young women receiving CERVARIX.

well .. Romania is as well as possible on HPV program. The government together with pharma guys managed to vaccinate less then 20% of the girls. It was a great resistance to hpv vaccines. Parents got real information about side effects + some "old" doctors helped with their knowledge. In 2009 the ministry of health tried 2 times to re-start the vaccination program but it was useless.

Some people translated studies, articles and other people managed to spread the info. the "old" doctors are those doctors trained before the big pharma era. They manage to cure hpv in about 2 months and they didn't recommend the vaccine ( they were against the vaccine due to the fact that many children are born infected with HPV, so the vaccine will do nothing but increase their chances to get cancer by 44.5%, according to Merck's docs); first the doctors treat any candida infection ( internal or external infection), they increase the folic acid, vitamin C, D and A (mainly lycopene) levels. Women also receive local treatment with a medicine called Cervugid.

Any unawake nwo sheep can figure out that the vaccine killed just by reading this article. Piece it together. Girl gets vaccine a few hours later that same girl who got the vaccine is pale and not breathing and then she dies. I could see it being hard to figure out if she was vaccinated six months-1year but a view hours you know what it was.
