Author Topic: House passes bill to prevent government shutdown  (Read 2074 times)

WASHINGTON — The House passed legislation Friday to head off a government shutdown next week by temporarily extending spending on most federal programs at current levels, while boosting lawmakers' office budgets by more than 8 percent.

The House passed the measure by a 217-190 vote. It would keep the government running for another month and it also patches over problems in the financially struggling Postal Service and funds soon-to-expire highway programs for another month as well.

But in an unusual step, those measures were tacked onto a $4.7 billion House-Senate compromise bill that will fund Congress' own budget. That measure was chosen because it can't be amended before being presented to President Barack Obama, which saves time — and spares Democrats politically difficult votes on both the House and Senate floors.

Sure sounds like bankruptcy is on the horizon in another month so they can still operate after the collapse.  Shocked

I would actually think the gov shut down would be a good thing I mean if the president actually did win by popular vote, he wouldn't need all the servants staff, and security entourage that costs HOW much per day?

Exactly, but their not about shut down, cause they need to rape the money and get the heck out of dodge.

Seen a few people talking about this on economic blogs saying the dollar will fall after the g20 meeting is over.

The United States has been bankrupt since the civil war sent it into receivership.  Its the corporation which received the assests of the US government (land, buildings and citizens) which is now going bankrupt.  They'll vote a bailout for themselves.

"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years..."

Interesting observation - but it's because some people - usually those who have obsessions with power and money - are such huge morons.

Guess that's what happens when everything you get your whole life is fed to you with a silver spoon.

Heck, I bet many Native American tribes lasted far longer than that - but then 'reality' was a way of life for them.

We were not founded as a  democracy, this was supposed to be a republic.

We were not founded as a  democracy, this was supposed to be a republic.

Better go figure out what a Republic is, and what is meant by Democracy... or I can just tell you.

The Fall of the Roman Republic.

"The final decades of this era saw a worsening economic situation for many plebeians. The long military campaigns had forced citizens to leave their farms to fight, only to return to farms that had fallen into disrepair. The landed aristocracy began buying bankrupted farms at discounted prices. As commodity prices fell, many farmers could no longer operate their farms at a profit.[49] The result was the ultimate bankruptcy of countless farmers. Masses of unemployed plebeians soon began to flood into Rome, and thus into the ranks of the legislative assemblies. Their economic state usually led them to vote for the candidate who offered the most for them. A new culture of dependency was emerging, which would look to any populist leader for relief."

They're not morons, they're simply don't care about the United States. Also... no form of Government is permanent -- which is a good thing imo.

OK, Congress is making waaaaay to much, they need to be shut down too. What good are they? They are only there to pass the laws to legalize tyranny and destroy the USA.

We could turn the whole thing around if we got good men and women in there instead of lazy crooks. The Congress is a great idea, so long as the people elect the right representatives. But no amounts of 'laws' will prevent a tyranny from occurring if those who enforce the laws go along with it. Factor in the Supreme Court deciding what the constitution means and twisting it after the fact of laws being passed and you technically have a 'legal tyranny.'

I guess, I mean that - they do not realize the final outcome?

It could only be mass revolution; with a large cost in blood or enslavement; both of which - history has time and again shown are full of massive FAIL. One could post pages and pages of examples: Slavery in this country - turned into a blood bath; death camps in Germany - another bloodbath. Many examples in history - of both violent revolution, along with 'successful' enslavement - for a time; that eventually - again ended as a bloodbath.

Technology moves forward; 'political science' moves backwards; and it's very problematic. It will only further amplify the lessons of history - maybe loud enough for anyone left to hear it very well.

To be a supposedly 'educated' person who has been to college; they still fail to see this?

Self styled oligarchs just can't help themselves apparently, even if they know better. They also know what happens if they don't go along with the program. They don't care in the sense that even if they did care a little bit, they aren't courageous enough to speak out. By that you could say they're morons since the endgame is nightmarish and to be avoided at any cost... But my point is simply that they understand what they're doing and where the country is going, and they just don't give a shit (enough anyway). But yes a lot of them in there are truly morons.  Cheesy But they are lead/influenced by non-morons.

Yeah, I see that side too, in a way.. heh. But I have a funny feeling that "Murphy's Law" may well impact their plans, I guess.. we'll see.

I don't underestimate them - so perhaps I guess you could say where one might have a fair amount of intelligence - it doesn't mean they have the wisdom or common sense to direct the intelligence in a 'productive fashion'.

And unless 'history' takes a dramatically different route, well..

It won't break my heart if the government shuts down--by all means put up the "closed for winter" signs.   Tongue
