OAKLAND (KDKA) ―Things turned violent when a group of students and protestors were told to disperse in Oakland Thursday night.

According to police, about 1,000 students gathered on Schenley Plaza near the Phipps Conservatory while world leaders were inside.

Police then moved the crowd to the William Pitt Union and attempted to disperse them.

At that time, protestors began throwing rocks at the police, who responded with pepper spray and rubber bullets.

Self-proclaimed anarchists then began smashing store windows along Forbes Avenue.

"If you want to protest, you have your rights to protest under the constitution, but you should do so peacefully. You shouldn't be destroying the windows of other corporations just because you don't agree with their policies. I feel like you can protest capitalism but you can do it peacefully as well and the violence is unnecessary," Pitt student Johanna Ojo said.

According to police, 42 people were arrested in the incident and there is no word on the cost of the damage caused at this time.


Seriously? The article, with the information gotten primarily from the police, says that they moved them and tried to disperse them BEFORE any violence occurred.

Having seen more videos, it seems that there were some that did take more negative action against the police, rolling large garbage/recycling bins down hill toward the police line, etc.  However it is few and far between.

I have no interest in spinning the situation, not even to support my own belief that the police acted inappropriately, or that the majority (vast majority at that) were non-violent and even largely compliant with police instructions/commands.

That includes throwing out that anyone doing violence was a meth-head and/or anarchist zombie or provocateur.  What I am interested in is accuracy of information, and spreading the truth.

Personally, I think it likely that they were either idiots or employed by the local PD, and the incidents were minuscule in ratio to the people that were protesting peacefully.  There's even the highly remote possibility that it was an action taken in self defense (not sure how that'd work, but it's possible).  That doesn't mean we ignore those incidents, or spin them in our favor.

The way to beat the NWO is with the truth and by being better people than they are.

I live in Pittsburgh and I was downtown when this happened. The newspapers the next day softened it alot. Mainstream media. pshhh....
