Director Robert Erickson documents the demolition of a dormitory on a college campus to compare the process with what conspiracy theorists claim took place in the twin towers and caused them to fall.

WEDNESDAY 11/19/08

I arrived in Thibidoux, Louisiana just after 1PM this afternoon. The Demolition team had not been clear about exactly where on the Nicholls State University campus this old dormitory was located. I called the foreman and he told me to look for the tallest building in the area. I finally found the nine-story brick structure behind the football field. They gave me a hard hat and set me loose. I fired up the HD camera and rolled tape. The place was abuzz with acetylene torches and sparks flying as they cut the steel beams. About a dozen workers. Lots of noise, jack hammers and big equip. Thinking about the World Trade Center towers I considered how difficult it would be to do this work without someone noticing.

The building is nine stories high. An old dormitory. They have knocked through the cinderblocks and are torching the beams, actually cutting a large "V" to weaken them. They will finish the major prep on Thursday and load the explosives on Friday.

Jim Redyke, from Dykon Demolition, tells me that the beams they are cutting here in Louisiana are puny compared to the WTC beams. WTC beams are ten times larger. Some effort spent on weakening the heavily cemented staircase/elevator shaft.

THURSDAY 11/20/08

It is cold again this morning but will warm up through the day. Redyke was fairly helpful today. I ventured onto the upper floors to see their destructive efforts there. Cinderblock columns smashed to reveal the steel girder beneath. I captured--more destruction, more torches, and a safety meeting. In the early afternoon Redyke put together the explosives, inserting fuses into the copper shape charges and dynamite sticks.

The University is planning quite a celebration for the implosion. They've invited crowds, put the blast off till 11AM, they are selling raffle tickets to see who pushes the button, and the Jazz band is coming to play a New Orleans style funeral dirge just before the explosion.

EIGHT years after Sept. 11, the debate over what ex actly happened that tragic day -- and who is to blame -- rages on.

Several of the most widely known tenets dear to the hearts of those who don't believe the official explanation for what brought down the Twin Towers are put to the test Monday night in an unusual National Geographic Channel special, "9/11: Science and Conspiracy."

* Was the Pentagon hit by an airplane or a missile?

* Did the Twin Towers really collapse from fires caused by burning jet fuel?

* Or were carefully placed explosives inside the buildings the real cause of its collapse?

The special is built around a series of scientific experiments that were conducted under the watchful eyes of a group of Truthers -- the name the conspiracy movement has given itself.

But at least one local Truther -- Sander Hicks, producer of WeDemandTransparency.com and author of the controverisial conspiracy book, "The Big Wedding" -- has seen a critic's DVD of the special and has his own reaction:

"This documentary is clearly part of the cover-up," he says.

Hicks takes issue with everything from the way the documentary seemed to brush off Truthers as being "sick, stupid and psychologically damaged because we need the truth," he says, to its choice of scientific experts.

Not suprisingly, his biggest criticism was with the way the experiments were conducted.

"It's pseudo-science," Hicks says. "Any high school student would tell you, to do experiments in New Mexico [where much of the pyrotechnic tests were conducted] with different kinds of materials is a joke."

The explosives planted in the WTC argument? The TV special tested with only regular thermite (a pyrotechnic compound) and not "super thermite" as Truthers believe was the culprit.

"That's like saying, 'We want to do an experiment with whiskey, but we're going to use beer instead," Hicks says.

While the reason for this is explained in the documentary -- there's a question as to super thermite's actual existence -- executive producer Erik Nelson says he'd been dealing with the debunking debunkers for a while now.

Nelson, who says he "didn't have a dog in this hunt," insists that the goal of "9/11: Science and Conspiracy" wasn't to debunk Truthers, sway any minds or hide contrary test results.

The producer concedes he would've loved it if the Truther theories were proven correct.

"Our ratings would've gone through the roof!" he says.

"What do you think is more ratings grabbing: proof 9/11 was a conspiracy or proof that the official story was correct?" he asks. "It would've been fantastic to prove that the Truthers were correct, but sadly -- as far as my ratings are concerned -- that's not what happened.

"I would say that [Hicks'] response would be no different from the Truthers we shared our results with in the film," Nelson says -- "absolute rejection of every single point we're bringing up."

He goes on to add that "there's no more pseudo-science used in our forensic tests than the pseudo-science used in promoting the Truther theo-

One thing that Hicks did like about the documentary was that it gave the featured Truthers a fair shake.

They "come off as careful and professional, unemotional, but compassionate about the truth," he says. "A lot of times a documentary like this will cut up their words," but this one didn't.

"I actually take great hope from this [documentary] because it really shows that our opposition is on the ropes," Hicks says.

"One good thing about this documentary is that it's showing that the topic is still relevant and that the case isn't closed."

I myself have noticed that Nat Geo almost appears tainted at times as if compromised by propagandists. But other times, it seems accurate. It's hard to tell.

I suspect these are Eastern Standard time. I live out west Mountain Standard time, and when a commercial for them says 9pm, it's 6pm for me in Arizona (no daylight savings here). When the time "falls back", we go back to being 2 hours behind EST, and 1 hour ahead of Pacific Standard. Kinda weird with no Daylight Savings involved, and the rest of the country is changing twice a year.

Intended to address the issues raised by people who question the official story of the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the documentary “9/11: Science and Conspiracy” probably won’t change anyone’s mind on either side.

Airing tonight, Monday, Aug. 31, at 8 p.m. on the National Geographic Channel, the two-hour program depicts several scientific experiments that have been staged to answer the major points raised by the conspiracy theorists.

The documentary, however, doesn’t feel scientific. It often falls back on standard devices to build tension: hushed narration, ominous music, quick cuts to darkened or bleached-out shots of wreckage.

The sound and look clash radically with the documentary’s purpose, making it seem like one of those old “In Search of…” shows, which were intended to question official versions of events, not support them.

The experiments are presented in a more straightforward fashion: Well-credentialed experts attempt to reconstruct events in the attacks that the skeptics, known as “truthers,” say couldn’t have happened the way they were supposed to.

For example, to address the charge that burning jet fuel couldn’t have caused the World Trade Center’s steel girders to buckle, a testing laboratory ignites a puddle of jet fuel below a smaller girder, which buckles in less than four minutes.

Throughout the documentary, some leading truthers view the footage of the experiments and give their reactions. The narrator invites us to observe how they “process information contrary to their beliefs.”

One says that in real life the jet fuel burned out quicker; another says that their theory involves explosives, so this is irrelevant.

Until someone sets up an experiment in which a 100-story building built exactly to the World Trade Center’s specs collapses after being hit by a commercial airliner, these people aren’t likely to change their minds.

Some of the issues raise by the truthers, however, aren’t addressed, or are addressed in brief asides. This leaves this documentary open to charges of picking and choosing which points to cover.

“9/11: Science and Conspiracy” spends too much time discussing the psychology behind conspiracy theories—which isn’t really a hard science. It’s unclear why the producers chose the novelist David Baldacci as one of their experts on this topic.

When asked to provide an overarching theory of how and why the attacks occurred, the truthers who appear on camera are careful to say that they’re only questioning the official story, not offering their own narrative.

But as one writer interviewed on the show points out, any plausible conspiracy would have to involve so many people that someone would have spoken up by now.

That’s probably the best answer to the truthers, but you don’t need science to figure it out.
