12,000 Kids to be used as Guinea Pigs for Flu vaccine

Some Oklahoma children will get a swine flu vaccine before it is available to the public. If clinical trials go well, the vaccine could be available in limited supplies by mid to late fall, experts said.

IPS Research in Oklahoma City is the first Oklahoma company to conduct the vaccination trials and will begin enrolling study patients Aug. 17, said IPS Research medical director Dr. Louise Thurman.

Nationwide, 12,000 children will be given the vaccine for the trial, she said. The company should know today whether it will conduct adult trials, too.

University of Md. to test swine flu vaccine
Center for Vaccine Development will be one of eight testing centers nationwide

The University of Maryland School of Medicine's Center for Vaccine Development will be one of eight centers in the nation to test a swine flu vaccine on adults and children.

The clinical trial, slated to begin next month, will enroll up to 1,000 adults and children to evaluate whether the vaccine is safe and effective in preventing the virus known as H1N1, which public health officials fear could mutate into a deadlier strain this fall.

Health officials, infectious disease experts and vaccine makers have been scrambling for months to confront the swine flu pandemic, which has killed at least 263 people nationwide – including three in Maryland--and sickened as many as 1 million, according to estimates by the Centers for Disease Control and prevention. Most cases have been mild, however, and people who fall ill with flulike symptoms are not tested and usually recover within a week or so, much like the seasonal flu.

Public health officials have been monitoring the virus' spread in the southern hemisphere, where flu season is now at its peak, paying close attention to any changes in the strain and bracing for a more severe version this fall. They hope to have a vaccine ready for distribution to the public by October.

University of Maryland scientists plan to test the vaccine in healthy adults and elderly volunteers first before testing it on children, who are among the groups at greatest risk for contracting the virus.

Czech newspapers are questioning if the shocking discovery of vaccines contaminated with the deadly avian flu virus which were distributed to 18 countries by the American company Baxter were part of a conspiracy to provoke a pandemic.

The claim holds weight because, according to the very laboratory protocols that are routine for vaccine makers, mixing a live virus biological weapon with vaccine material by accident is virtually impossible.

A U.S. based pharmaceutical company that just weeks ago was involved in a scandal involving vaccines tainted with deadly avian flu virus has been chosen to head up efforts to produce a vaccine for the Mexican swine flu that has seemingly migrated into the U.S. and Europe.

Baxter confirmed over the weekend that it is working with the World Health Organization on a potential vaccine to curb the deadly swine flu virus that is blamed for scores of deaths in Mexico and has emerged as a threat in the U.S., reports the Chicago Tribune.

Baxter has previously worked with governments all over the globe to develop and produce vaccines to protect against infectious disease or potential threats from bioterrorism. After 9/11 Baxter helped supply stockpiles of a smallpox vaccine and in 2003 the company was contracted to develop a vaccine to combat the SARS virus. In 2006 the UK Government announced plans designed to inoculate every person in the country with Baxter’s vaccines in the event of a flu pandemic.

However, Baxter has a very recent and most disturbing connection to flu vaccines.

As reported by multiple sources last month, including the Times of India, vaccines contaminated with deadly live H5N1 avian flu virus were distributed to 18 countries last December by a lab at an Austrian branch of Baxter.

It was only by providence that the batch was first tested on ferrets in the Czech Republic, before being shipped out for injection into humans. The ferrets all died and the shocking discovery was made.

Given the reports of the possibility of a swine flu epidemic, it is interesting to note that last time there was a significant outbreak of a new form of swine flu in the U.S. it originated at the army base at Fort Dix, New Jersey.

Hundreds of soldiers on the base, mostly recruits, were infected without becoming ill in 1976.

President Gerald Ford immediately ordered a nationwide vaccination program.

More than 40 million people were vaccinated. However, the program was stopped short after over 500 cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, a severe paralyzing nerve disease, were reported. 30 people died as a direct result of the vaccinations.
