The Billings Murders
by Chuck Baldwin
July 17, 2009

By now, most Americans are familiar with the horrific murder of a Pensacola, Florida, couple by the name of Byrd and Melanie Billings. They were the parents of 17 children, 13 of whom were adopted--most of whom had disabilities. This case hits home with me, because they lived in my hometown of Pensacola. I did not know them personally, but they were fairly well known around town. Byrd was a well-to-do businessman who owned a used car business and financial loan service.

Byrd and Melanie were shot to death in their own home a week ago Thursday. So far, eight people have been arrested in the case: seven men and one woman. The seven men are each charged with two open counts of murder, and the woman is charged with accessory to murder after the fact. Law enforcement officials said yesterday that at least one more "person of interest" is being sought.

The Billings murder case was broken open by the fact that their home was equipped with a surveillance system, which recorded the vehicle used to transport the murderers to the home and probably much of the criminal activity inside the house, although the sheriff's office has not released the video of what was recorded inside the house. The video of the van led police to the suspects. Our State Attorney, Bill Eddins, says that all of the perpetrators who actively took part in the shootings are in custody. At least five of the men were inside the house when the murders took place; and police said the killers were in and out of the house in four minutes.

In a news conference yesterday, Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan and State Attorney Bill Eddins said they have the murder "weapon or weapons." They also said that the remaining "person of interest" was supposed to disable the surveillance system but did not do so, which is why the system was still operational when the crimes occurred. In addition, Morgan and Eddins said the motive was robbery, because a small safe was taken from the house, but that other motives could also apply to the killings. Federal agencies are also assisting with the Billings murders, including the FBI, BATFE, and DEA.

To my way of thinking, this case smacks of much more than a robbery gone badly. There were at least eight, and maybe nine, people involved. Maybe more. The invasion and killings were perpetrated in less than four minutes, by multiple assailants, and with "military precision." The home invasion took place at approximately 7:30 p.m. local time. And at the time of the shooting, nine of the Billings children were in the home.

I believe murder, not robbery, was the motive. Extraordinary planning and the number of personnel involved indicate to me that the Billings were executed, and that robbery was an afterthought--or was even intended to be a ruse to mislead law enforcement. The real reason behind the killings may never be known, of course.

Regardless of the "why" and "how" of the killings, one thing is painfully obvious: a violent attack took place against a man and his wife inside their own home. And while the circumstances of the Billings case may be sensational, the simple fact that a couple was murdered inside their own home has become rather commonplace throughout the United States. Nationwide, home invasions are skyrocketing.

Home is the one place where most of us feel safe and protected. Even those who have a keen sense of self-defense feel free to let their guard down at home. And, sadly, most people do not possess a keen sense of self-defense. Most people have the deluded opinion that law enforcement will protect them. But even law enforcement professionals will tell you it is not their job to protect citizens; it is their job to apprehend and bring those who have committed crimes to justice. In other words, after you are dead, the cops will try to catch the guys who killed you.

It is time that people wake up to the fact that the responsibility of self-defense rests with each individual citizen. We are all vulnerable to attack--even in our homes! For this reason, our federal Constitution and most (if not all) State constitutions recognize the Natural Law right of people to keep and bear arms.

Over the past 40-plus years, however, miscreants in Washington, D.C., and in our State capitols have been whittling away at the right of the people to keep and bear arms. Lawful gun dealers are being harangued and harassed out of existence by the BATFE. Law enforcement agencies and State prosecutors often side with criminals when they are shot in self-defense by intended victims (especially in the Northeast). The media often characterizes lawful gun owners as "gun nuts" or "militia members" to try to create the impression that they are "dangerous" or "extremist." Public education--especially higher education--is often a willing participant in helping to demonize gun owners. Even Hollywood often uses its influence to sway public opinion against gun owners. All this, coupled with a natural lazy tendency of urban living, equates to a careless and defenseless society: something both would-be tyrants in government and street criminals love.

Fortunately, America's founders were wiser than most of today's generation. They understood the relationship between the citizen's right (and determination) to keep and bear arms and his or her safety and security.

For example, Thomas Jefferson said, "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." He also said, "Laws that forbid the carrying of arms . . . disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes . . . Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."

Likewise, Thomas Paine said, "[A]rms, like laws, discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property . . . Horrid mischief would ensue were one-half the world deprived of the use of them; for while avarice and ambition have a place in the heart of man, the weak will become prey to the strong. The history of every age and nation establishes these truths, and facts need but little arguments when they prove themselves."

The Billings double murder is the latest example of just how vulnerable we all are to the violent tendencies of evil people. For this reason (and more), every American should (1) resist any and all attempts by government to curtail or restrict our legal right to keep and bear arms, and (2) purchase, practice with, and always keep our own personal firearms handy. Furthermore, we should always live in a heightened "state of alert" (even in our own homes), because both our lives and our liberty may depend on it.

PENSACOLA, Fla., July 15, 2009
Cops: Fla. Slay Plot "Basically Flawless"
But 8th Suspect Never Showed To Turn Off Surveillance System, Police Say; Another Person of Interest Found
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/07/15/national/main5162013.shtml

CBS/AP)  The accomplice assigned to turn off surveillance cameras before an elaborate, deadly break-in at a sprawling Florida Panhandle home never did, but the seven people accused in the crime apparently did not know that, authorities said Wednesday.

Melanie and Byrd Billings, known for adopting a large brood of children with special needs, were shot to death about a week ago. An extensive surveillance system captured footage of masked men - some dressed as ninjas - slipping into front and back doors at the home and stealing a safe, among other items.

The men were in the nine-bedroom house for just four minutes and on the property for 10, Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said. Video captured during that time led investigators to a red van used as a getaway car and eventually to the suspects.

Morgan said investigators have been pondering "the huge gap" in what was otherwise a precise, methodical crime for which the suspects had trained 30 days. They were a loosely connected group of mostly day laborers who knew each other through a power washing business and an auto detailing operation.

"The execution was basically flawless," Morgan said. "The one gaping hole that would not have made this a perfect operation, if you will, was the fact that the surveillance system was not disabled. I guess the question was why was it not?"

Investigators have not said what was in the safe or what else was taken from the house. Morgan said they also do not know why the camera system remained on. He speculated that maybe the person who was supposed to turn it off had an attack of conscience. "Who knows?" he said.

Also Wednesday, Morgan said police in Orange Beach, Ala., had found a real estate agent named Pamela Laverne Long. Authorities had earlier sought public help finding her, saying they were concerned about her safety because she hadn't been heard from in about two days.

Police in Orange Beach, about 30 miles from Pensacola, found her at or near a marina on Wednesday afternoon, Morgan said. He said she was not in custody and was returning to Florida voluntarily. He said investigators believe she has "significant and substantial information" needed to conclude the case.

Morgan said Long is friends with and rents property to 35-year-old Leonard Gonzalez Jr., whom Morgan described as a "pivotal person" in organizing the crime.

Morgan also said authorities are looking for another person of interest who may have been assigned to turn off the surveillance system, possibly remotely, though he did not identify that person.

Morgan told CBS' "The Early Show" earlier Wednesday that investigators had "verified yesterday that this team, this group of people, had been in training at least 30 days, a month, prior to the execution of it at the Billings' compound."

Morgan also said investigators believe they know who shot the couple.

"We have identified, in fact, who participated or I should say was the active shooter in this case. We've been asked not to release that at this time," he told "The Early Show."

The sheriff has become the public face of the high-profile case by peppering his updates with ready-to-publish sound bites.

Nine of the couple's 13 adopted children were home during the break-in. Three saw the intruders but were not hurt. The couple also had four children from previous marriages.

State Attorney Bill Eddins has said he will ask a grand jury to indict all those arrested on first-degree murder charges in the Billings' shooting deaths. He said robbery was the main motive.

The suspects range in age from 16 to 56. One, Donnie Ray Stallworth, was with the Air Force Special Operations Command with an aircraft maintenance squadron at Hurlburt Field near Fort Walton Beach. It wasn't clear how he knew the others. Stallworth had been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan five times since 2002, an Air Force spokesman said.

Gonzalez was charged with murder and read a statement in court Tuesday proclaiming his innocence.

His father, Leonard Gonzalez Sr., 56, was charged with evidence tampering after authorities said he tried to cover up some damage on a red van seen on surveillance video pulling away from the house. Officials said the damage was unrelated to the crime.

Day laborer Wayne Coldiron, 41, was also charged with murder. He sometimes worked for a pressure washing business owned by the elder Gonzalez.

The other suspects arrested were Gary Sumner, 31, a day laborer, 19-year-old Frederick Lee Thornton, and a 16-year-old whom officials are not naming because he is a minor.

I have to agree with Pastor Chuck about the motive. The above info is inaccurate and misleading. Gary Sumner (Jr) was not a day-laborer. He owned a "pimp-my-ride"-type custom shop out in Fort Walton and never seemed like he was hurting for money (I was told that a couple of the other guys arrested worked for him at his shop). I believe it was called "5th Dimension". (I'm not positive that's the business name but that what the decals on both of his SUV's said). I'll have to dig out his business card when I get back home and verify. Gary and his father were semi-regular customers at the sandwich shop I used to work at. I'd seen them on and off for about 2-3 years. The other day my ex-boss kept calling me from Florida (and I kept missing the calls, I'm in NOLA at the moment) and I started to worry....thoughts that my house burned down or that a friend died or something. So I call him back, and he tells me "Turn on CNN. You're not gonna believe this shit." And there in the right hand corner of the screen was a picture of this guy that I made lunch for dozens of times. I never knew him personally, I just know what kind of sub the dude likes. He and his dad were these super cool, muscle/custom/olds-chool/newsschool car lovin' types....both very personable and considerate. I can't believe THAT guy is involved in the taking of someone's life. Murder? Gary?? NNNNnnnooo f'in way!.......Way...apparently. I'm still a bit in a "really hard to believe" state about it.

As you can imagine, everyone at home is sorta freaking out. I mean, a couple of years ago we had that guy who was a director of youth sports in Gulf Breeze get busted for pedophilia (surprise surprise) then "suicides" himself in jail, the guy who ditches an airplane mid-flight and crashes up in Milton (the "capital" of our county), now this.... We need some damn UFO's to break up the weirdness.

is anyone else thinking this smells of Al-CIAda black ops?

Too precise and too vicious of a killing for me.

There wasn't even anything of great value in the "safe" that the thieves stole.

I also remember seeing how one of the 8 suspects was a female sherriff from another county - wtf does that mean?

There's more to this story, and I noticed the news has stopped covering it heavily.  I think the security cameras caught a CIA hit squad.

But then, maybe I'm just paranoid... Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Odd that in this extremely well-planned, well-executed (Flawless???) op, they forgot to turn off the surveillance cameras. Right. I agree, something doesn't smell right.

Maybe they  ARE part of bubba-caida... Shocked trained for thirty days  Shocked, sounds  more like it will be used for anti terror action against middle aged white and clueless  peeps. Undecided

If the alarm was not disabled, it went off...why did these murderers stick around with an alarm going off ?
A cop could have been right in front of the house when the  call came through... odds are slim ,but  that's the chance you take.
Most criminals  run off  ,unless they are really callous.Makes  no sense, they are feeding out  a line of  G A R - B A G E

Look into the companies like ADT, Wackenhut (exposed as working with PROMIS software to engage in false flag attacks), the Navarro Group (after a former sherriff who was notorious for running a drug smuggling operation right out of his county courthouse), IBM (Smart homes with full risk management home surveillance systems), GE (major player in home surveillance infrastructure), and others, etc. These companies will be getting wndfall profits from everyone running to call for new surveillance systems.

I still think that something is missing even besides this NWO agenda running wild on TV ads and elsewhere.  This is like one of those Smart/Jon Benet things. Something went horribly wrong and some very senior people are connected to some sick shit that is being covered up at light speed.

Let me guess, the person who was supposed to turn off the surveillance system will turn out to be an FBI informant who should otherwise be deported because of fraud related charges.
