Ten people in Britain are being questioned after a shop assistant was blasted to death in the Salford area of Greater Manchester.

The 27-year-old was killed by a hail of bullets on Saturday night, police said.

He was shot at least six times whilst working at Brookhouse Wines supermarket.

A lone gunman walked into the store at 9pm and opened fire at the man before escaping in a car.

The victim, who has not yet been named, was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital where he died shortly after arriving.

This is an absolutely horrific attack,' detective Superintendent Rebekah Sutcliffe, of Greater Manchester Police says.

'Every indication suggests that, tragically, he was genuinely an innocent bystander who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

'We can speculate that it was a robbery gone wrong but nothing was stolen so at the moment we have no motive.'

The murder weapon has not been recovered but the escape vehicle, a blue Mazda, was later found burnt out in Wigan.

According to neighbours the victim was called Max, although this is not thought to be his real name.

One resident said: 'My wife used to work with him. He was a good Muslim, he led a straight life and kept himself healthy.'

Another neighbour said she heard a gunshot followed by the sound of sirens 15 minutes later.

'I spoke to someone who was in (the shop) at the time. They just walked in and shot him,' she said.
