[23 miles off the coast of Gaza, 15:30pm] - Today Israeli Occupation Forces attacked and boarded the Free Gaza Movement boat, the SPIRIT OF HUMANITY, abducting 21 human rights workers from 11 countries, including Noble laureate Mairead Maguire and former U.S. Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney (see below for a complete list of passengers). The passengers and crew are being forcibly dragged toward Israel.

"This is an outrageous violation of international law against us. Our boat was not in Israeli waters, and we were on a human rights mission to the Gaza Strip," said Cynthia McKinney, a former U.S. Congresswoman and presidential candidate. "President Obama just told Israel to let in humanitarian and reconstruction supplies, and that's exactly what we tried to do. We're asking the international community to demand our release so we can resume our journey."

According to an International Committee of the Red Cross report released yesterday, the Palestinians living in Gaza are "trapped in despair." Thousands of Gazans whose homes were destroyed earlier during Israel's December/January massacre are still without shelter despite pledges of almost $4.5 billion in aid, because Israel refuses to allow cement and other building material into the Gaza Strip. The report also notes that hospitals are struggling to meet the needs of their patients due to Israel's disruption of medical supplies.

"The aid we were carrying is a symbol of hope for the people of Gaza, hope that the sea route would open for them, and they would be able to transport their own materials to begin to reconstruct the schools, hospitals and thousands of homes destroyed during the onslaught of "Cast Lead". Our mission is a gesture to the people of Gaza that we stand by them and that they are not alone" said fellow passenger Mairead Maguire, winner of a Noble Peace Prize for her work in Northern Ireland.

Just before being kidnapped by Israel, Huwaida Arraf, Free Gaza Movement chairperson and delegation co-coordinator on this voyage, stated that: "No one could possibly believe that our small boat constitutes any sort of threat to Israel. We carry medical and reconstruction supplies, and children's toys. Our passengers include a Nobel peace prize laureate and a former U.S. congressperson. Our boat was searched and received a security clearance by Cypriot Port Authorities before we departed, and at no time did we ever approach Israeli waters."

Arraf continued, "Israel's deliberate and premeditated attack on our unarmed boat is a clear violation of international law and we demand our immediate and unconditional release."

Well, looks like they've all been set up; looks like a media diversion (how many more of these will we have to endure?)

Let's see how this pans out.

IDF seizes control of boat bound for Gaza
By Barak Ravid and Anshel Pfeffer, Haaretz Correspondents, and Reuters

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1096729.html

The Israel Navy intercepted a boat carrying international activists attempting to break a blockade of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Tuesday and forced it to sail to the southern port city of Ashdon, the army said.

Earlier Tuesday, the navy surrounded the vessel, which was also carrying humanitarian aid, and told the activists to turn back because of security risks in the area and the blockade, according to the army.

But the boat later entered Gaza's coastal waters, the Israel Defense Forces Spokespersons' Office said in a statement, after which a naval force boarded it.

No shots were fired during the boarding of the boat, and the crew was to be handed over to the appropriate authorities, the army said.

In the statement, the IDF Spokespersons' Unit added that it "would like to emphasize that any organization or country that wishes to transfer humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, can legally do so via the established crossings between Israel and the Gaza Strip with prior coordination."

The army said humanitarian goods found on board the boat will be transferred to the Gaza Strip, subject to authorization.

An earlier statement by the voyage's organizers, the Free Gaza Movement, said the vessel, renamed the Spirit of Humanity, left the Cypriot port of Larnaca on Monday bound for Gaza with three tons of medical supplies.

The 20 passengers include former U.S. Representative Cynthia McKinney, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire and other activists from Britain, Ireland, Bahrain and Jamaica.

The Free Gaza Movement has organized five boat trips to Gaza since August
2008, defying a blockade imposed by Israel when the militant group Hamas
seized control of the territory from its Palestinian rivals in June 2007.

Two other attempts were stopped by Israeli warships during Israel's three-week offensive against Hamas in the territory in December and January. Nobody on board was harmed.

Israel tightened a blockade on Gaza in 2007 after Hamas seized control of the territory, home to some 1.5 million people.

Israel threatens to shoot international activists
« Reply #14 on: June 30, 2009, 04:50:11 pm »

Press TV
Tuesday, June 30, 2009

The postwar humanitarian crisis in Gaza takes a turn for the worse with the Israeli Navy intercepting a relief ship headed toward the coastal strip.

A group of 21 activists sailing to Gaza said Tuesday that Israeli forces had threatened to gun down their boat unless they changed direction.

“There is a patrol boat around us and we were told that if we did not turn back they would open fire,” Reuters quoted Irish activist Derek Graham as saying.

“We are continuing our course to Gaza,” he added.

The Free Gaza Movement activists had left the Cypriot port of Larnaca earlier on Monday to deliver three tons of medical supplies, some tool kits and copper wiring to Gaza.

The activists onboard included an Irish Nobel peace laureate and a former US congresswoman (Cynthia McKinney).

Tel Aviv has tightened a blockade on Gaza, which is home to some 1.5 million people, since the democratically elected government of Hamas took power of the strip two years ago.

I've been reading some AP/BBC/Reuters news articles and cannot believe the spin they put on this situation.  God forbid the Gaza'n people get to EAT!  Or get MEDICINE!  And where is the USA press?  I mean, a former congresswoman was on board!  I was just about to say American officials should tell Israel to let her go, but she is a Haitian citizen now.  Correct?

It's actually the second time something like this has happened to Cynthia McKinney.  Don't forget what happened late December of last year when the ship Dignity was rammed and forced to dock in Lebanon.

Oh wow...so Obama did NOT keep his word. :-[

No, he certainly didn't.... this is sad news, indeed...

Here's the original e-mail I received from people close to Cynthia McKinney and her network of people in that movement

Quote
Saturday, June 27, 2009
FREE GAZA and SPIRIT OF HUMANITY are determined to sail
The Free Gaza Movement is about to embark on another courageous sea voyage
from Cyprus to Gaza, bringing 3 tons of medical supplies, 15 tons of cement,
and boxes of toys and crayons for children - all materials banned by the
Israeli government from entering the besieged Gaza Strip.
The two boats, FREE GAZA and SPIRIT OF HUMANITY, will carry human rights
workers and journalists from 16 countries, including Nobel laureate Mairead
Maguire and former U.S. Congresswoman and presidential candidate Cynthia
McKinney. This will be the movement's first attempt to challenge Israel's
naval blockade on Gaza by sea since the Israeli Navy brutally rammed the
boat DIGNITY in December 08 [CNN video report] and nearly sank the SPIRIT OF
HUMANITY with all on board in January 09.
The expedition of two ships was supposed to leave Cyprus on June 25, but did
not, after Cypriot authorities required additional detailed inspections.
Responding to the Israeli authorities' warnings that they will forcefully
prevent the ships from reaching the Gaza Strip, the Free Gaza movement
stated:
"The purpose of nonviolent direct action and civil resistance is to take
risks -to put ourselves 'in the way' of injustice. We take these risks well
aware of what the possible consequences may be. We do so because the
consequences of doing nothing are so much worse. Anytime we allow ourselves
to be bullied, every time we pass by an evil and ignore it - we lower our
standards and allow our world to be made that much harsher and unjust for us
all."
The Israeli government is planning to commit, for the third time, an act of
piracy on the high seas. Israeli Navy warships have been ordered to thwart
the humanitarian mission to Gaza - by all means. Robotic and obedient that
they are, Israeli soldiers will comply with any order given to them,
including an order to attack the ships and fire on the unarmed human rights
workers.
Only two people can prevent a brutal attack on the civilian boats that
might, God forbid, turn into a bloodbath. Their names are Barack Obama and
Hillary Clinton. This is a test of their leadership, and commitment to human
rights and international law. It will also put to the test their lofty
rhetoric about ending the oppression and humiliation of Palestinians. In his
now-famous Cairo speech, President Obama declared:
"So let there be no doubt: the situation for the Palestinian people is
intolerable. America will not turn our backs on the legitimate Palestinian
aspiration for dignity, opportunity, and a state of their own...Israel must
also live up to its obligations to ensure that Palestinians can live, and
work, and develop their society. And just as it devastates Palestinian
families, the continuing humanitarian crisis in Gaza does not serve Israel's
security."
In the coming days we shall see if the President intends to keep his
promise.

Correspondence with Israeli Embassy re Gaza Piracy
« Reply #26 on: July 01, 2009, 08:23:12 am »
My complaint to the Israeli Embassy elicits a remarkably informal and rude reply, to which I respond as politely as I can under the circumstances…

    Dr Raymond Deane

From me to the Israeli Embassy, Dublin:

To the Ambassador of Israel -
Your country is once again disgracing itself. This time it has committed an act of piracy: the arrest on the high seas of a boat, appropriately named “The Spirit of Humanity” (a spirit that your state forever seeks, in vain, to crush), and the confiscation of its cargo of medicines and toys for the beleaguered people of Gaza.

There are two Irish citizens aboard this craft, as well as a former US presidential candidate. I hope that these facts will contribute towards bringing the infamy of your country’s conduct more prominently to the attention of the people of the world, who have for too long turned a blind eye to Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people.

In the name of humanity, I demand that your criminal armed forces release the crew and passengers of the “Spirit of Humanity”, and allow the boat to continue on its way to Gaza.

Yours faithfully -
Dr Raymond Deane

From Derek O’Flynn, Press Officer, Israeli Embassy, Dublin:

You are completely wrong:

1) since Hamas control Gaza and their stated intent since their Charter of 1988 is to destroy Israel and exterminate Jews, Israel cannot permit unrestricted access to Gaza for fear of arms being imported etc.

2) the restrictions on Gaza imports/exports are by Israel and also Egypt (which likewise doesn’t want Hamas to be built up in arms and resources)

3) the Palestinian Authority also permits Israel to patrol the waters off Gaza. These are not international waters; they are internationally recognized as Israeli-patrolled waters.

4) 300,000 tons of humanitarian supplies have been facilitated by Israel alone since January alone into Gaza

5) if people wish to give aid to Gaza’s people, they can easily do so through normal channels. Charging a boat into Israeli waters is simple attention-seeking, not about real aid, because they know they will be stopped and get their 15 minutes of fame (e.g. a boat in august 2008 was carrying 5,000 balloons!!!!).

6) on this occasion, laws were breached – the boat flew the Greek flag (illegally), told the Cypriot authorities they were going to Port Said Egypt (a lie – they knew they would not get a permit to go to Gaza), they changed their declared destination en route (violating international maritime law) and then violated the Israeli-patrolled waters off Gaza.

Get your facts straight and don’t rely on the IPSC (Ireland Propaganda Solidarity Campaign.)

PS if you care so much for humanity, why don’t you and your pals go to Iran and actively support the democratic activists there; or go to Saudi Arabia and demand equal rights for women and the right to build a church; or go to Syria and demand homosexual equality… but of course you won’t because you wouldn’t come back alive. It’s so easy to bash Israel, a liberal democracy, the only one in the region, because you can get away with it.

My response to Mr O’Flynn:

Mr O’Flynn -
You seek to counter my arguments by repeating the clichés of Israeli propaganda, but you’re wasting your time.

Firstly, despite being democratically elected Hamas does not control Gaza, because Israel controls its airspace, borders, and marine access. Under international law Gaza is still occupied by the rogue Israeli state.

Secondly, the fact that the Egyptian dictatorship colludes with Israel’s criminal policies out of fear of its own internal Islamic opposition is scarcely something to be proud of.

Thirdly, it’s a joke to say “the Palestinian Authority also permits Israel to patrol the waters off Gaza”. (a) The PA is a Quisling or Vichy regime – again, this is scarcely an alliance you should be proud of – and (b) the PA has no power to “permit” or “forbid” Israel from committing any crimes it chooses to commit. The phrase “internationally recognized [sic - interesting and appropriate that you use the American spelling] as Israeli-patrolled waters” is as meaningless as asserting “the coast of Somalia is internationally recognised as pirate-patrolled waters.”

Fourthly, the 300,000 tons you refer to – even if this figure is correct, which is by no means certain, as Israeli propagandists pick figures out of the air – is utterly insufficient to deal with the humanitarian needs of the Gazans.

Fifthly, Israel and its dictatorial Egyptian ally block all “normal channels” of aid to the Gaza people. The “Spirit of Humanity” did not “charg[e] into Israeli waters” – it was not in Israeli waters. “Seeking attention”, in this context, means alerting the world to Israel’s crimes and Egyptian/EU/US complicity in those crimes and is an honourable procedure.

Sixthly, laws were indeed breached – by the Israeli pirates. There was nothing illegal about the boat’s flying the Greek flag (and had this been the case, it would still not have justified Israel’s piracy), and since the entire world – including the co-operative Cypriot authorities – knew of its plans to travel to Gaza for weeks prior to disembarkation, it is pathetic nonsense to claim that wool was being pulled over anyone’s eyes. And, once again, the phrase “Israeli-patrolled waters off Gaza” means much the same as “pirate-patrolled waters off Somalia”, except that at least those pirates are within their own waters.

Your final gambit constitutes the standard recourse to red herrings: the fact that Iran, Syria and Saudi Arabia violate human rights doesn’t in some mysterious way mitigate Israeli crimes, although it’s interesting that you implicitly acknowledge that Israel belongs in such dubious company. Even if it were true that Israel is “a liberal democracy” – which it is not, because Israel is an Apartheid ethnocracy or racial state – this would in no way mitigate its crimes.

If this is the best you can do, Mr O’Flynn, I recommend you seek employment elsewhere – I’m sure Mr Mugabe needs a press officer.

Sincerely -
Dr Raymond Deane

Could this be one of many topics that will be used to defend the 'hate bill'?

How many people will hear this story and say 'that fricking Israeli, blah blah blah.'    Then those in congress can say 'see, people need to be punished for freedom of speech.'   Just a thought.  ::)

Israel boards activist ship heading to Gaza
military at: 1602 PST Wednesday, July 01, 2009
http://www.geo.tv/7-1-2009/45167.htm

HELD AL-QUDS: The Israeli navy on Tuesday boarded and seized a ship carrying pro-Palestinian activists that was heading to the Gaza Strip in defiance of Israel's blockade, a military spokesman said.

"In the last hour an Israeli navy force intercepted, boarded and took control of the cargo boat 'Arion' ... as it was illegally attempting to enter the Gaza Strip," the spokesman said late in the afternoon.

The military said the ship, which was sailing under a Greek flag, was the same vessel known as the "Spirit of Humanity", which was sailing to Gaza to protest the Israeli blockade on the Hamas-ruled territory.

The spokesman said the navy had been contacting the boat since Monday evening and warned that it would not be allowed to enter Gazan waters "because of security risks and an existing naval blockade."

After the navy boarded the converted ferry it towed the vessel toward the nearby Israeli port of Ashdod, the spokesman said, adding that the activists on board would be handed over to authorities.

He said no shots were fired during the incident.

The boat was sent by the US-based Free Gaza Movement, which said it was carrying a "symbolic" cargo of humanitarian aid to pressure governments and international relief groups to do more to rebuild Gaza.

Greece quickly protested the seizing of the Greek-flagged vessel, saying "we remonstrated with the Israeli side and asked for the ship, the crew and the passengers to be released immediately," foreign ministry spokesman Grigoris Delavekouras said in a statement.

"As we have said in the past, all legal activity by non-governmental organisations must enjoy freedom," he said.

Amid media reports that several Britons were on board the boat, the Foreign Office in London also expressed concern, although it said it was still trying to clarify the facts.

"We would be concerned if the stories of the Israeli Navy boarding the boat in international waters were true," a spokesman said.

"We strongly advise all British nationals against travel to Gaza, including the waters off Gaza. We have made it clear to Israel that we are very concerned for the safety of British nationals."

Activists have made five successful missions to Gaza from Cyprus since August 2008 -- but boats have been turned back twice by Israeli forces.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Free Gaza movement said that Israeli warships had surrounded the Spirit of Humanity and threatened to open fire if it did not turn around.

At one point, the Israelis jammed the boat's instruments, blocking their GPS, radar and navigation systems "in direct violation of international maritime law," the group said.

The Israeli foreign ministry said the boat's owners had lied before departure from Cyprus about the vessel's destination, saying it was bound for Port Said in Egypt.

The ministry also said that under the 1993 autonomy accords struck with the Palestinians, Gaza's territorial waters, like its land borders, were Israel's responsibility.

Former US congresswomen Cynthia McKinney, one of 21 activists aboard the Spirit of Humanity, expressed outrage.

"We demand that the Israeli government call off their attack dogs," the Free Gaza Movement quoted her as saying a few hours before the vessel was intercepted.

Irish Nobel peace prize laureate Mairead Maguire, for her part, said US President Barack Obama "has called upon the Palestinians to abandon violence but Israel is denying them the right to non-violently resist the siege of Gaza."
"He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself."

Why the f**k is this not as important as the Iranian hostage situation?

A Middle East group of terrorists who are connected to Al-Qaeda have kidnapped a US congressperson!

Where the F is the outrage?

Exactly -- kind of disappointed in how little commentary this is getting from the forum

Just got off the phone with the Israeli embassy in Paris.  I received the rhetoric expected --- I am steamed.
She says the boat was apprehended in Israeli controlled waters as per a treaty signed by Gaza and the Israelis in 1994.  I pointed out that this is weak because that was the PA and not the democratically elected Hamas government.
They have all the answers without any MORAL support.  Which I pointed out.

URGENT: Israelis kidnap Cynthia McKinney!!

Israelis kidnap Cynthia McKinney!

1. URGENT ACTION NEEDED!

[23 miles off the coast of Gaza, at 15:30pm today][30 Jun 2009] - Israeli
Occupation Forces attacked and boarded the Free Gaza Movement boat, the
"Spirit of Humanity," abducting 21 human rights workers from 11 countries,
including Noble laureate Mairead Maguire and former U.S. Congresswoman
Cynthia McKinney (see below for a complete list of passengers). The
passengers and crew are being forcibly dragged toward Israel.

"This is an outrageous violation of international law against us. Our boat
was not in Israeli waters, and we were on a human rights mission to the
Gaza Strip," said Cynthia McKinney, a former U.S. Congresswoman and
presidential candidate. "President Obama just told Israel to let in
humanitarian and reconstruction supplies, and that's exactly what we tried
to do. We're asking the international community to demand our release so
we can resume our journey."

According to an International Committee of the Red Cross report released
yesterday, the Palestinians living in Gaza are "trapped in despair."
Thousands of Gazans whose homes were destroyed earlier during Israel's
December/January massacre are still without shelter despite pledges of
almost $4.5 billion in aid, because Israel refuses to allow cement and
other building material into the Gaza Strip. The report also notes that
hospitals are struggling to meet the needs of their patients due to
Israel's disruption of medical supplies.

"The aid we were carrying is a symbol of hope for the people of Gaza, hope
that the sea route would open for them, and they would be able to
transport their own materials to begin to reconstruct the schools,
hospitals and thousands of homes destroyed during the onslaught of "Cast
Lead". Our mission is a gesture to the people of Gaza that we stand by
them and that they are not alone" said fellow passenger Mairead Maguire,
winner of a Noble Peace Prize for her work in Northern Ireland.

Just before being kidnapped by Israel, Huwaida Arraf, Free Gaza Movement
chairperson and delegation co-coordinator on this voyage, stated that: "No
one could possibly believe that our small boat constitutes any sort of
threat to Israel. We carry medical and reconstruction supplies, and
children's toys. Our passengers include a Nobel peace prize laureate and a
former U.S. congressperson. Our boat was searched and received a security
clearance by Cypriot Port Authorities before we departed, and at no time
did we ever approach Israeli waters."

Arraf continued, "Israel's deliberate and premeditated attack on our
unarmed boat is a clear violation of international law and we demand our
immediate and unconditional release."

3. For anyone who didn't see the follow-up posted in early February on my
blog about Barbara Lubin's story from Gaza, here it is below:

*************

Dear readers,

When I first received Barbara Lubin's story from Gaza, I wrote her to ask
how she, I, or someone on the ground could research the story to get all
the facts. The MECA office informed me that Barbara had told the story to
someone on the phone who wrote the letter, but in the confusion and
bad/intermittent phone connection there were several misunderstandings.
One of MECA's contacts in Gaza investigated the story to get all the
facts. Here is what he found:

"The story happened in Bourij Camp in the middle of the Gaza Strip. The
Israelis [army] called the woman, Manal Albatran, and told her that they
wouldn't kill her or her husband Hussein Albatran, instead they would make
them die of sadness because they would kill her children. The next day
they shot her house with a rocket killing her and 5 of her children.

"The dead:
Manal Albatran 30 years old
Walaa Albatran 12 years old
Islam Albatran 11 years old
Belal Albatran 10 years old
Ezz Albatran 8 years old
Ehsan Albatran 7 years old

"The father who is an employee at an UNRWA school and the youngest child
were saved. This is the real story and I hope the amount of victims will
convince others to believe the crimes we face. Thanks a lot for your
appreciated visit and I hope to see you again soon.

"Regards, Talal Abushawish"

The information uncovered by Mr. Abushawish is clearly different from the
story initially reported by Barbara. I am sorry to have relayed something
that had been miscommunicated. In contrast, the reality of hundreds of
mothers and children killed and families destroyed in the massacre is no
legend. Let's hope that professional reporters and investigators are
permitted (not denied entry) to follow-up on this family's tragedy--and
all the others--to bring the facts to light and eventually to an
international court of justice. We owe it to the victims to report every
incident as accurately as possible. Thank you to everyone who encouraged
me to seek the details of the story.

In peace,

Anna
