I keep reading mixed information about this, from what I understand, I can open carry my shotgun or rifle openly in my car as long as it's unloaded. But there appears to be a restriction if you are within 1000 feet(?) from a school.

Anyone know for sure?

Not really sure if I would do this either way, seems like it would cause a hassle if I was pulled over.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head.

http://www.calguns.net   A wealth of info on that sight for CA gun laws.

Openly displayed, unloaded.

If you conceal it, then it must be locked up.

Not within 1,000 feet of a school is unlawful and can be contested.  For instance, I live by 3 THREE f**kin schools and couldn't get a gun to or from my house "legally."  My lawyer said we would cross that bridge if and when we come to it.  We have housing that backs up to schools- those people are never allowed to own a gun?  I doubt it.
