Boy you sure are ignorant aren't you LoL. When you buy 98% of boxed software, it comes with something called an EULA (End User License Agreement, AKA CONTRACT). The IP holder (usually the developing company) claims all rights on that software and that you have no rights, not even to execute, until you AGREE CONTRACTUALLY to the EULA, at which you are given the LICENSE (PERMISSION) by the IP holder to USE said software in accordance with your contract (EULA). Don't misunderstand this here: Software licensed under the GPL technically and legally is equal to that of proprietary software in regards to the IP holder's rights. What makes GNU/Linux and other software under the GPL unique is that the contract associated with it gives you pretty much all the rights to do what you see fit with the software so long as you meet certain conditions. The big condition is that you may modify and redistribute the software, but ONLY if you provide the source code and the GPL AS WELL. 'software without a licence' so if I make a software and decide not to make a license, are you going to 'phone the authorities' on me ? because you're so high and mighty make sure all the software you use has the type of license that makes you feel good before you use it.

Exactly. You can take GPL source code and modify it into different source code and keep it GPL and open-source, but you're not allowed to take GPL source code and alter the source code and claim yours is closed-source and proprietary.

I did not take the original post that seriously, like how could some one be posting so much stuff on this thread and not understand Copyright Law, Software Licences and the GPL . . . . Still it would explain an awful lot of the earlier posts on this thread if some of the posters really was genuinely that ignorant. I just do not know if some of these posters are not old enough to know better, or just plain retarded. Its hard to judge on a forum, especially with the short posts of awful grammar. I could jump to the conclusion that short awful posts equates to low iq and to much fluroride, but you never know if its dyslexia or if english is foreign language.

Yea people, you don't own* the software you run! It's all licenses to use based on contract law. The GPL forces certain rights to be transferred to users and dampens the power of monopolies in software from cornering the software market (market of userbase, not money, in most instances). Micro$hit's licenses are all least privileged and designed to extract the greatest profit while giving you as little as the mean of you-all (think german word ihr) are willing to accept.
EDIT: *own: exception: software you wrote. ADDENDUM: The GPL doesn't make the name and logo free to be owned by anyone, only software. So if you run linux then you own most of the code, just not the brandings, and you only own the code if you keep it licensed under the GPL, as a condition in the contract (GPL) you entered into.

I get a strange feeling that I might be almost the only person round here who writes software. Do you ever get that feeling ?

Ah but if you can code and have used multiple languages it does make you qualified to speak. Just like if you have used mulitple OS not just the current Mac/BSD/Linux versus Windows. What I'm driving at is that simply repeating opinions that one has read in a magazine or on-line does not cut it with me. It is down right irritating to hear just echos of ideas. In particular I would recall the mentioning of SCO fiasco on this thread. We had people doing that clearly do not understand anything regarding a software licence.

CORRECT! I am a Dvorak-typing Linux user! So not only do I use free software, my fingers are traveling 1/8-1/4 the distance daily by using Dvorak instead of Qwerty. Yea, in a typical 8 hour shift for a professional typist, his fingers will have traveled an estimated 16-18 miles. Thanks to the more efficient key layout of the Dvorak keyboard, that same typist's fingers would only have traveled 2-4 miles. Think of the stress I'm saving with this layout! It is freakin' great. BTW, my kb is not ANSI DVORAK but is custom. I rearranged my Qwerty kb on my laptop to match ANSI DVORAK, except arranging the numbers in classical Dvorak instead (all even numbers on right hand, all odd numbers on left, value increases by +2 from center to outside exept for 9). dvorak of course....

They are permanently set. It really wasn't that hard. I don't switch between. I can type on qwerty, poorly, if I warm up for 20 minutes (or get really st0n'd, then my qwerty can come back, but never sober x.x). I'd love to have this keyboard: http://www.typematrix.com/dvorak/And I'd really love to have this one, but it's too expensive: http://store.ergoguys.com/me3d.htmlbtw do you enjoy setting your keyboard character map in two places... in your xorg cfg and your bashrc ?

I hope that was unintentional because it makes it more funny that way! Kids, don't forget to ipconfig /renew! At the very end of time there will still be three humans arguing over linux vs windows vs mac.

I recompiled my kernel the moment I found SElinux was NSA-designed, though now I know that it's not that big of a deal. There is no known backdoor that people are aware of, and the only security concern is that it's easier for third parties to find vulnerabilities to exploit since the code is public. I took it off my kernel just because I have no use for the extra security it can bring me... plus of course, it's from the NSA. Who can honestly say they like the NSA. Perhaps uninformed geeks, but not me. Nuh-uh, not this nerd!

How did the NSA sneak a backdoor in open source code to begin with? Do you have any proof of this "backdoor"?

They did it already in Windows, it's purportedly on Mac, is it any far stretch of the imagination that it was implemented in Linux in the NSA's kernel code?

Does it matter which kernel version I use? Because my Linux Mint came with 2.6.28-11 generic, and I would like to use the 2.6.3 kernel.
