"If I had the money". That is a good argument FOR using Open Source software, which can produce just as good results as commercial software.
Amen to that! I had a mac which I bought used for over twice the money of the Linux system I'm currently using. As for GIMP, I'm a printer by trade and have a pretty discerning eye and I haven't found fault with it. Haven't used PS very much though.

Anyone familiar with Linux knows that one of it's biggest problems has been hardware compatablity. I'm no tekkie but that he means that the new kernel will be more compatable with existing hardware which revolves around MS the real new world order.

If it hasn't already begun someone should begin an NSA free distro.  Just remove the backdoors and advertise it as such.  I've seen a post on the Internet from the NSA as to how to remove it.  I believe they added the backdoor so Linux could be used in government offices to save money (which of course would steam Microsoft).  But you'll find a lot geeks who are sheep and will just go along with "orders."  Historically geeks have not been political and they sell out easily.

I said "has been" not "is". Things are getting better. BTW, this computer I'm using now can't be upgraded because everything won't work with the latest version of the kernel.

I curse all Linux fanbois with the Curse of Nvidia Driver Installation Fail.

No, seriously, once Linux gets proprietary drivers done right, it is all over for M$.

Which is why M$ is trying to get major content providers like the major networks to move to MOVE player.

Build that wall high, Redmond, the Penguins are at the gates!

The hardware it has trouble with does exist, and for a good reason.

No.1 Reason :
Instead of providing electronic components the card uses your cpu instead.
 Winprinters
 Winmodems

No.2 Reason :
It so new and still buggy that no Linux user has bought it yet because it is overpriced.

You are also under the false impression that these are installed by default.

Timelady also supports Agenda 21 as well as Planned Parenthood

If you lived where I did you'd think this was a good idea too.

Within a mile of me I can count at least thirty abandoned houses, ten abandoned factories, an abandoned church, and for some reason there's also an 8 square acre area that's basically abandoned land that's thought to be  owned by Norfolk-Southern.

At least vacant lots will be more tolerable than dilapidated buildings used by gangs.

Hipster? Everything I have on came from Wal-Mart. I bought a mac because windows is a piece of crap not to mention big brotherish and I got tired of fighting compatibility issues with Linux. I'm back with Linux but would still use a mac if money weren't the issue. OSX offers the best of both worlds IMO.

According to Stallman both Mac OSX and all current Windows versions have NSA backdoors. So sure - for gaming Windows is fine, but I wouldn't use it for serious work/stuff.

I don't think so.  We've had discussions here on this before.  SELinux is installed by default on some distros.  I've been programming for over 26 years (probably longer than some folks here have been alive) but systems programming is not my cup of tea.  So I have no ambition to start a Linux distro.  Too busy with other more interesting development.  Grin

AFAIK Red Hat Fedora Linux has SE Linux built-in.

I highly doubt SELinux is a backdoor into your kernel.  Under menuconfig you must enable it AND have the proper boot switch in menu.lst in order to activate it.  IF a backdoor persisted AFTER verifying it was disabled under menuconfig, THEN that would mean the backdoor is in the kernel OUTSIDE the scope of SELinux.

I'm sure if SELinux was vulnerable, it would have some policy implementation vulnerability.  NSA wanted in the game to make sure a security option was weak and hard to configure out there (while still providing great utility in government use).  I mitigate the risk of SELinux in my kernel with GrSecurity patches.  One day I will learn how to gut it from the source tree.

Yup

The point that seems to be lost on the Trolls is that code is OPEN.
You think its got a backdoor, go and download it, find it, and post a patch.

Compare that with Microsoft and you have no choice, no disclosure.

to tell the truth if I could I'd run AmigaOS, but I don't see the point in buying a PowerPC computer just for that

I'd love to see an x86 port of AmigaOS...although I'm not sure how good hardware driver support would be for it. About the same as eComStation, aka OS/2 Warp?

If any Windows users need a fast-booting OS just to surf the web and check email, go for something like TinyCore (free) or Xandros Presto (commercial).

well I probably could run it on VPC and pretend I have an Amiga laptop

...

I actually do the same for Win98 SE, which will always be the OS of my heart :3

So does Ubuntu, but it's not enabled by default. You have to enable it yourself by executing a few terminal commands as well as install extra packages related to SELinux.

Of course the real issue the Trolls wont address is there is no secret code, its all open source.

I think it's more along the lines of "Damn I paid good money for this WinBlow$, good money for this Norton, good money for this Zone Alarm, good money for this Spy Sweeper program, good money for this Photo$hit, good money for this Micro$hit Oriffice (Office, for the dim), good money for this mahjong game, and good money for Quicken, and my system runs like ass!"  When you tell them it's the stuff they sank wads of cash into, they ignore your arguments as too expensive (apple) or you have to be an anti-social nerd (unix) and that their WinBlow$ is just fine!

I would be interested in teaming with somebody on this project. I don't have the know-how to do it on my own, but I think with a partner or a team it would be quite doable. It's just basically patching the kernel, right?

I look at it from an economical stand point little boy, why don't you grow the hell up?

Actually, in the says of 1980's computing, most computer users could code. It seems to be a bit of a lost art. With the advent of the GUI, we have all become a bit retarded when it comes to computing. We don't need to understand computers so much to use them anymore.

I argue that Linux is easier to use than Windows, once you have it set up. I don't get the virii, trojans, hack attacks, constant crashing, registry problems, software bloat, general buggery and all that. But you'll probably want to study how to use it first, it's got a bit of a learning curve. Once you reach a certain level, your productivity increases exponentially.

If you ever bought a computer from most stores, it was included in the price of the computer they sold.
