Oops! It turns out that any 32-bit OS can be install on 64-bit systems...it just won't take advantage of your 64-bit system's 64-bit horsepower.

I've just tested it, and it works fine as a live CD. I see you have put the links for the web sites in the "Applications" menus. I suspected you would. But thought you might also put them instead as bookmarks in Firefox, as I, and surely other people in here also, have. I see in another post of yours that you are trying to discover how to do this. Great! That would make it a more "proper" distribution and, I guess, maybe one eligible to appear on DistroWatch? Now that would be great. The day it appeared there. To have all the GNU/Linux users reading the announcement and asking "What the hell..."  hehe (It would be a great anti-NWO publicity stunt.) |

I was thinking of creating an OS like Gnusense using their builder application, except using Linux Mint as the base.
The main idea here is you strip out all the proprietary code and binary blobs from the kernel, and get rid of all non-free software and drivers.
Then of course you can add it in as needed, but you start with a completely free GNU OS and you're able to add in only what you need.

I mean simplest to use, with the least need for the typing...and / or a linux version that would include a linux tutorial??
I understand the intimate details have to be tweaked from a text prompt, but the first time I tried linux I could hardly use it beyond the start menu equivalent nothing worked, so I was like 'even if it's better at least I can use windows'

I haven't use the OpenOffice Word Processor much, but it has been enough for my needs. And it is surely much better than the Microsoft Word I used back in high-school for scientific reports and such. Yes, it was by now quite a long time ago, but if I managed to do what I had to back then with MS Word, I guess I would also be able to with today's OO Word Processor. Maybe it is not as advanced as MS Word, but hey, it surely has a much better quality-price ratio and I guess it will always be able to follow Microsoft's steps with some lag. Not a problem for me. I'm not in a hurry for the latest functionalities. If it's a software-related problem, the crashing part might be because of a bad package choice or combination made by your specific distro. Try others. |

bmanmcfly: The most user-friendly distro out there is www.ubuntu.com. I learned my GNU/Linux basics years ago from a Debian manual, but I'm sure there are better introductions out there by now. The Ubuntu site has some documentation, including an introduction to people who are migrating from Windows. Maybe that's a good start. The configuration operations are becoming ever more automatic, graphical and simple to do. And for the ones that still have to be made from the terminal there are usually good tutorials available in the help forums. My first GNU/Linux experience was quite awful also , but it was back when it was starting to evolve. Everything has progressed quite a bit since then and I think now is a good time for anyone with a bit of patience to start seriously considering this alternative. |
