Taurine is an amino acid which neutralizes MSG.  It is even provided in hospitals to people who are reacting to MSG 'sensitivities'. It is very effective. I have used it previously in a similar instance. It is something that you should keep around the house, just in case this happens. You can get it at any health food store.

If you don't have any, and you have severe reactions to MSG (or practically any other poison), you could take activated charcoal. It's a lot for me to explain here, but I wrote an article about it previously. You may want to check it out, but don't use it routinely; because it will also sap any nutrients out of your foods, too.:

A lot of MSG is labeled as "Natural Flavors" now. You have to watch out for that.

I said that consuming iodine in its synthetic form is bad for you, yes. We need iodine, and most of us don't get enough of it. However, the safest way to get it is through tropical application. The only stuff that we can buy in a bottle is synthetic, it is not that which is naturally occurring in foods, and it is not the stuff that is added to salt and bread to "enrich" it. It is potassium iodide that is added to those things, because it is non-toxic. Read the end of the article about the best way to apply it:

"Back in 2007, all of the members of our household decided to test if we were iodine deficient. Everyone was. Want to test yourself? You should place some Iodine (we used 2%) on your stomach. Make a circle the size of a quarter. If it disappears within 12 hours, then you are iodine deficient, because a body only absorbs iodine at the rate it needs. In times of illness, iodine will rapidly absorb. Iodine is the basis of all nutrients in your body, since the cells need it to regulate their metabolism. Without it, people are known to suffer from swollen glands in the throat, decreased fertility rates, increased infant mortality rates, and (with severe deficiency) mental retardation. It has also been theorized as a cause of ADHD for newborns of iodine deficient women. It is the critical nutrient that powers the thyroid, and is therefore paramount to a healthy immune system."

For others reading this, the article in reference can be found at: http://naturallygoodmagazine.com/blog/index.php?entry=entry090514-015033

Hello Sarah,

I have been using World Organic Liqui-Kelp Iodine for my family and I.  I know you mentioned Lugols so I am wondering if you think this is not good idea to take either?

Hey Donnay;

Sorry that I haven't gotten to your post until now.  There are a couple of reasons that I wouldn't recommend this product. First of all, while they have the nerve to call it 'organic', it actually contains Sodium Benzoate. Read up on the allergy problems that this can cause, along with the dangers to children.  Countries throughout Europe are scrambling to inform the public about the latest danger in soft drinks, and encouraging manufacturers to voluntarily remove sodium benzoate from their products.  Several media outlets from abroad are calling for a ban on the preservative, to protect children's safety.  While there are many chemical additives which are hazardous to your health, sodium benzoate stands out for its ability to switch off vital parts of the DNA.

On top of that, it also contains starch, yeast, and sugar. Starch neutralizes iodine. If you call poison control, and ask them what to do if you have taken iodine, they will tell you to eat any product you can find with starch in it. Therefore, any benefits that you would have gotten from iodine will be gone. This is snake oil. It even has artificial colors and flavors. Buy some iodine, and apply a patch (quarter sized) to your skin. If it disappears in less that 24 hours, you are iodine deficient. Simply keep adding iodine in the same manner, increasing gradually; until it stays for around 24 hours.

On the bright side, at least the iodine wasn't toxic.  Smiley

I hope that this helps. Again, sorry for the delay.

Thanks Sarah!  I appreciate the information.  To make one correction it says: "Free of; Sugar, starch, yeast, corn, wheat, milk, artificial color and artificial flavor."

The sodium benzoate did have me concerned and I have read a lot of European studies about it.

Sorry about that. As said earlier, though, I would avoid taking iodine internally, and I would avoid the sodium benzoate. I guess I was a little tired when I wrote the last message. Sorry!

Magnesium is also a great protector from MSG poisoning.  You can buy it in supplemental form from any health store, and even Slave-Mart has a couple variants of it.

Yes. MSG also depletes your magnesium. It is one of the main reasons you'll see young athletes have sudden heart attacks in the middle of a game. Depleted magnesium combined with MSG is a deadly combination. It can be as simple as eating KFC before going to play.
