In the US, however, it's a different matter. Remember Boston Dynamics' Atlas? The 5' 9" tall, 180 lbs robot is perfectly suited to replace any number of fast food employees. All it needs is the McDonalds retention letter and the next stage in the war of (minimum paid) man against robot may commence.

Umpire needs glasses!!!

Who Is Ready for Baseball’s Robot Umpires?

Quote
With the proliferation of technology in modern lives, Jason Gay asks where professional sports should draw the line
Every day, it seems, I read a melancholy confessional from a human disenchanted with modern technology. I’ve been there. Our smartphones, tablets, and laptops as thin as palm fronds simplify life in so many ways, but once you do it all—I mean, when you really hit the heights, and download an app that allows you to order lunch, triple-A batteries, a mortgage, a psychotherapist and a Maltese puppy, all delivered within a half hour—you’re inevitably struck by a soulless, hollow feeling, not unlike the 4th quarter of a Knicks game.

Few among us have not looked down upon that glowing rectangle in our palm and wondered if life would be better if we walked to the water’s edge and pitched the stupid thing in the ocean. (Whereupon it would be retrieved by a dolphin, who, six months later, would also be wondering if it, too, had become addicted, and should toss the stupid thing back to shore.)Today, many of us are trying to roll back on our tech dependency. We try to untether for small slivers of time – weekend mornings, evenings after 9 PM, Mother’s Day (you didn’t untether for Mother’s Day? Oh well, Mom was going bananas on Facebook anyway.) We celebrate “slow” tech – landlines, vinyl, French presses, books, newsprint (if you’re reading this on newsprint, gold star for you!). We get excited about traveling to places that brag over how disconnected they are. There’s no wi-fi for 300 miles? Terrific.

(Seriously, 300 miles?)

All of us know people who have drastically shed tech from their lives. Their skin glows, their hair shimmers, they have better sex, and they start and finish jigsaw puzzles on vacation. Their testimonials arrive, unprompted: My life is so much richer without a smartphone. I gave up my iPad, built a canoe and restored a Buick Roadmaster. I quit Twitter, and had a conversation with another person. Out loud.

Won't have to many fans on this one.

Sorry
But I can't blame wendy"s in my opinion, greed was Trumped by costs.

$15 Minimum Wage Forces Wendy’s to Introduce Self-Service Kiosks

Quote
When the “Fight for $15” movement was first sweeping the country, none of its proponents had any idea what a higher minimum wage would truly entail. They live in a fantasy world where everyone should be paid a wage based on their needs rather than their skills, and where businesses and entrepreneurs can provide an endless supply of money (they’re just too greedy to do so willingly).

But now their chickens are coming home to roost. Companies that once provided cheap labor for unskilled workers are being forced to cut hours and benefits. Or in the case of Wendy’s, they’re forced to automate some of their services to make up the money they’re expected to lose from a higher minimum wage.

Last August the company’s President, Todd Penegor, revealed that they would be exploring automation in response to wage hikes. “We continue to look at initiatives and how we work to offset any impacts of future wage inflation through technology initiatives, whether that’s customer self-order kiosks, whether that’s automating more in the back of the house in the restaurant.”

Is The Fed Helping Robots Find Jobs?
14 July 2016
, by Bill Bonner - Bonner & Partners (Zero Hedge)
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-07-14/fed-helping-robots-find-jobs

“The feds say they are stimulating the economy and aiding employment with their ultra-low rates. But what they’re really doing is helping robots find jobs.

“As the cost of capital goes down, the relative cost of capital, as opposed to labor, also goes down. You can’t capitalize an employee. At least, not since slavery was abolished.

“But the real cost of a machine goes down when the cost of funds goes down. It’s a capital investment.

So, when the cost of capital goes down to zero, a company with access to that cheap – or even free – money can afford to pay almost an infinite amount of money to get rid of its employees.

Zero-interest-rate policy is really a full robot employment program.”
