Don’t Tase Me, Dad..

Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day turns into a real shocker

Take your children to work day, now with optional tasing.

Who knew taking your kids to work could be such a shocking experience. The children whose parents work at Franklin Correctional Institution in Carrabelle, Florida, that’s who.

When the unsuspecting children of the institution headed to work at the Panhandle prison with their moms and dads, they had no idea they’d be treated like inmates.

But that’s exactly what Sgt. Walter Schmidt did when he used a stunning device to zap kids with 50,000 volts of electricity.

The Sun-Sentinel reports the children fell to the ground, yelling in pain and grabbing at the red burn marks the volts left on their arms.

One child was even taken to a hospital.

Schmidt, who worked with the Department of Corrections for 14 years, says he doesn’t see how he was in the wrong, especially considering he asked for parental consent prior to shocking the youths.

“When they said, ‘sure,” I went ahead and did it, “ he tells the paper. “It wasn’t intended to be malicious, but educational.”

Seems Schmidt won’t be using his methods to further anyone else’s education. He was fired for the incident.

MY GOD!
You know, after 8 years in the Army and the past 10 years in law enforcement, I thought I had seen it all but aparantly the police have gone retarded! What in the f**k was this guy thinking? For one, a taser, baton, and chemical sprays are all classified as defensive weapons. They are not to be used to gain compliance in nonviolent situations like protests and the like. So, whenever you see the video of a cop tasing or spraying or beating someone for not listening, you are seeing the makings of a large civil suit.
As for this situation,They are never to be used on kids for educational purposes! If the parents seriously agreed to this then they should have their children removed from their custody and placed with some sane relatives or a foster family in the worst case scenario.
I seriously can't believe how bad this shit is getting.
My ead hurts just thinking about it, Shocked

LOL, nothing and I mean NOTHING shocks me these days.

Pretty soon they'll make a Law where the teachers in the school system will be able to torture your children in front of the class for their bad behaviour as an example.

What a sick, twisted world we live in!

Those parents need a flu shot!  or Bird shot!  nah Buck shot!..  There are too many people out there who would love to have children so they can play with them and love them.  Those childless people would love to take kids on outing that included museums, parks and ice cream.  WTF has happened to this country!

Well, soon the remote taser dart will probably have heatseeking, self-propelling, genetic-imprint lock-on, so your odds should get better....

LOL, there's no reason why you shouldn't.

In fact, when I was told to write a statistics paper, I was told to lie because the truth doesn't matter.

Seriously, I was told that.  I ended up failing the paper because the statistics were all made up and VERY embellished.  Then it was reviewed again after a year and I ended up graduating with honors because the score was changed from a 69 to a 90.

Corrections Officer Zaps Kids with Taser After Parents Agree
http://snafu-ed.blogspot.com/2009/05/corrections-officer-zaps-kids-with.html
Monday, May 4, 2009

A "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day" tour has resulted in a shocking experience for some kids, and a firing for a corrections officer.

At the Franklin Correctional Institution on April 24th, Sgt. Walter Schmidt (I suppose I should say former Sgt.) zapped at least two kids with a Taser, which can provide up to 50,000 volts to the victim.

Schmidt said the parents gave him permission to do so. Still, one might think a little common sense would tell the guy, "this is a stupid idea."

Schmidt was fired. Warden Duffie Harrison said Schmidt zapped "at least two kids," and Department of Corrections Secretary Walt McNeil said an investigation is underway.

The real investigation should be into how much common sense was lacking in both the former Sgt. and the parents, as well?

Eleven students at Booker T. Washington in Toulminville claim they were forced to wash patrol cars and threatened with taser guns by Mobile Police.

The same group of students was reportedly horse playing a few days earlier across the street from campus and believe that's why they were punished. Another parent tells us the punishment happened after the students vandalized the school gym.

According to the kids, police showed up on January 26th and hauled them to Precinct 3 in patrol cars. The kids tell us they were forced to run laps, wash police cars, smacked on the back of the head and threatened with taser guns.

At least two of the parents with kids involved say they were never contacted by the school about the form of punishment. Brozana Goodwin says she knows her kids aren't angels but wanted at least a phone call before her kids were taken away. "They contact me about everything else but they didn't contact me about this."

One parent is reportedly looking into filing a lawsuit against the school system. Mobile Police and the Mobile County School System won't comment on any specifics in this case but confirm they are investigating the allegations.

WARREN, Mich. (AP) - The family of a Detroit teenager who died after a Taser was used by police to subdue him has filed a federal lawsuit claiming his civil rights were violated.

The lawsuit was filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Detroit against the city of Warren.

It seeks unspecified damages and claims 16-year-old Robert Mitchell was shocked repeatedly with the electroshock weapon following an April 10 foot chase that began with a traffic stop just north of Detroit.

Police say Mitchell was riding in the car, but ran into a vacant house in Detroit. They say a Taser was used when he struggled with officers.

Authorities are reviewing the incident.

The Associated Press left messages Tuesday seeking comment from city and police officials.

Taser Guns On School Kids
The increasing use of taser stun guns to enforce discipline in schools is sparking controversy. CBS News' Wyatt Andrews reports.

Taser Guns Stunning Students
Controversy Grows Over Their Presence, And Use, In Schools
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/06/30/earlyshow/living/parenting/main705380.shtml
LAKELAND, Fla., 063005 | by Brian Dakss

(CBS)  The question is being debated in dozens of communities: How did the Taser, an electric shock weapon designed to incapacitate dangerous suspects, find it's way into schools?

reports on The Early Show, a 6-year-old boy who was cutting himself with glass was tasered in Miami. Officers said they did it to get him into custody.

Also in Miami, a 12-year-old girl was tasered while running away from police. She says, "They did mess up."

In Chicago, an unruly, 200-hundred pound, 14-year-old boy was tasered by police, trying to calm him down. The boy went into cardiac arrest.

A Taser was used at Lakeland High School in Florida last January. There was a fistfight, Andrews says. A big crowd gathered, and Police Officer Michael Branch, worried for a teacher who had fallen, pulled out his Taser stun gun.

"I'm like, 'What just happened? Did I just get tased?' " says the student, Sola Oyelowo.

He and one other student got tasered, but not for fighting. According to witness accounts, he was "in the way" of the officer.

Oyelowo told Andrews he wasn't in the fight, only watching it, along with 150 other kids.

Oyelowo's mother, Theodora Oyelowo, says her son was hurt, and the incident shows why Tasers don't belong in schools: "That was an electrical shock onto his body that never should have happened."

Sola says he can understand "completely" why a police officer approaching a fight scene like that would need to get people out of the way. So what was wrong about his being tasered in that context?

"Because," Sola responded, "he's at a school, and he's dealing with children."

Lakeland High principal Mark Thomas asks, "What do they want us to do with children that are out of control? If they don't want them tased … if they don't want them arrested … what do they want the school to do with the child that will not comply?"

At a lot of schools, Andrews observes, the issue isn't whether to have Tasers, the issue is when Tasers can be used.

For instance, should a student be tasered for mouthing off, or disobeying a teacher? How about a student caught in the act of skipping school?

At Lakeland High, there was even some casual tasering. Officer Branch, who was also a baseball coach, tasered five players, on a lark.

The players, including Christopher Sale, wanted to know what a Taser felt like, Andrews says.

"It didn't really hurt that bad," Sale recalls. "It kinda felt like a bee sting, a pretty powerful bee sting."

Lakeland, Fla. Police Chief Roger Boatner says Branch was disciplined because, "He went outside of our policy."

The department said Branch declined comment.

Most frustrating to parents, Andrews points out, is the unknown risk.

Taser safety studies done on animals have never focused on children, but do claim a margin of safety.

Taser International calls the weapon "the safest use of force compared with ... baton strikes, chemical agents or canine response."

Dr. Richard Luceri, a cardiac rhythm specialist and paid adviser to the company, says the current is too low to harm anyone: "Parents, or anyone else for that matter, should know that, as used in its current form, a Taser appears to be quite safe in all subjects … even if it's a small weight child, although we do not have a large body of evidence in that group."

However, Roger Barr, PhD., a biomedical expert at Duke University, says the Taser jolt can reach the hearts of children and is potentially fatal.

So, he says, when other experts say there should be no increased risk in children, "That's incorrect. Taser's own study shows that it's incorrect. Roughly speaking, when your weight is half as much, your risk is twice as much."

But not every student is a small child.

Alan Sale, Christopher Sale's father, isn't worried one bit that his son felt the Taser's sting: "Come stand next to my son and tell me that he's a child. …Tasers are unquestionably, enormously less dangerous than night sticks or a 9 millimeter (gun)."

Theodora Oyelowo, however, says, yes, some students are six feet tall, but to her, they are children: "They're not cattle. You use electrical shocks on cattle, on animals. Not people. These are God's children."

Some Florida lawmakers are hoping to pass a measure regulating the use of Tasers in schools in their state.

Now police are told they can use Taser guns on children
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-479341/Now-police-told-use-Taser-guns-children.html
By JASON LEWIS Last updated at 15:27 02 September 2007

Police have been given the go-ahead to use Taser stun guns against children.

The relaxing of restrictions on the use of the weapons comes despite warnings that they could trigger a heart attack in youngsters.

Until now, Tasers - which emit a 50,000-volt electric shock - have been used only by specialist officers as a "non lethal" alternative to firearms.

Stun gun: Tasers give off a 50,000 volt blast

However, they can now be used against all potentially violent offenders even if they are unarmed.

It is the decision not to ban their use against minors that is likely to raise serious concerns.

Home Office Police Minister Tony McNulty said medical assessments had confirmed the risk of death or serious injury from Tasers was "low".

But he failed to mention Government advisers had also warned of a potential risk to children.

The Defence Scientific Advisory Council medical committee told the Home Office that not enough was known about the health risks of using the weapons against children.

Tasers work by firing metal barbs into the skin which then discharge an electrical charge which is designed to disable someone long enough to allow police to detain them safely.

The committee, which is made up of independent scientists and doctors, said that limited research suggested there was a risk children could suffer "a serious cardiac event".

It recommended that officers should be "particularly vigilant" for any Taser-induced adverse response and said guidance should be amended to "identify children and adults of small stature" as being at potentially greater risk from the cardiac effects of Tasers.

The Government scientists were also asked to test whether the weapons could cause a miscarriage if used on a pregnant woman.

While not saying whether police would be allowed to Taser an expectant mother, the Home Office said the DSAC committee had "specifically asked" for computer simulations to be carried out to analyse the effect on "a pregnant female".

Amnesty International claims Tasers have been responsible for 220 deaths in America since 2001. Many cities and police forces there have banned their use against minors.

Two years ago in Chicago a 14-year-old boy went into cardiac arrest after being shot with one. Medics had to use a defibrillator four times to resuscitate him.

Taser International, the American firm that makes the device, said tests on pigs suggested the weapons were safe.

The Association of Chief Police Officers, which issues guidance to forces on the use of weapons, said Tasers would be made "readily available" for "conflict management" at incidents of "violence and threats of violence of such severity that they will need force".

Non-firearms officers in ten forces will be trained to use the weapons. Every incident they are involved in will be assessed over a 12-month trial period.

The now common issuance of Tasers really bothers me.  In the days before tasers, police had to use their brains, brawn, and technique to subdue out of control people/children.  I have seen different vids of tasers used on people lately on youtube and the only thing I can postulate is:  The cops have gotten lazy.

Additionally I feel that the ability for an officer to pull a trigger in order to secure someone troubles me deeply.  It is too similar IMO to a pistol.  When the citizens become accostomed to seeing a cop pulling a trigger device on another citizen, it will hardly shock (pardon the pun) when bullets are fired rather than voltage.

IMO, Taking kids to Prisons to scare them away from landing in that environment is one thing but shocking them with 50,000 volts WTF?

I agree with others.. The parents that allowed this should be arrested.

43 students received a shocking lesson on Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day.

Stunning and shocking are understatements in this situation, yet so appropriate.

Corrections officer give several children a shock when they visit the jail on Take Your Child to Work Day.

A total of 43 children were blasted with stun guns as part of an "educational" program during visits at three state corrections facilities during "Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day,"  a state investigation revealed Friday.

What's more crazy is that in every case, the parents or grand parents gave permission to the guards to shock the crap out of their kids. It's no shock that three guards have been fired and two others resigned as part of the fallout of the April 23 incidents. Another 16 employees, including the warden at one of the jails, will receive some disciplinary action, said Department of Corrections Secretary Walt McNeil.

''I can't imagine what these officers were thinking to administer this device to children, nor can I imagine why any parent would allow them to do so,'' McNeil told the Miami Herald. "This must not happen again.''

We wonder is there a program for shocking some sense into the parents who authorized the use of stun guns on 8- and 9-year olds.

None of the children were seriously harmed by the stun guns, which is hard to believe considering the electric charge that is sent through the target's body is enough to make a grown man have to change his pants. McNeil said the stun-gun execise only happened at three of the 55 prisons, but acknowleged that stunning childen probably happened regularly.

The officers apparently don't get much of a chance to use the stun guns and probably had an itchy trigger finger. According to McNeil, the guns have not been used on any of the 100,000 inmates so far this year.

Now that's a shocker.

If those guards woul have used it on the inmates, it would have caused a riot.  Using it on kids though with parents' permission, though.....
