That's their 2008 Annual Report, just to be clear (the url subdirectory says 2009). WOW, those are some big projections. Reminds me of the cipro/anthrax thingy in 2001.

Could the stockpile be reaching the end of it's shelf life? And they need to use it all up so that it will "necessary" to stockpile again? If they didn't use it up, it would probably be more difficult to justify replenishing the stockpile. Just think...if they use it all up the next stock pile will have to be BIGGER!
Like I've said many times before... I really think this flu has been around awhile, but they have now just decided to test for it and report it so that it appears that it's a pandemic....a reason to use up the stockpile. I think if we had been testing to the degree we are now, we would have found that this is not as rare as they are making it out to be and probably is no more deadly than the normal flu.

I think you may be onto something. Tamiflu, introduced in 1999, extended it's shelf life to three years in 2002.At some point, the shelf life was increased to five years, then in November 2008 it was extended to a shelf life of seven years in some countries, if the storage conditions were right. Oh, looky, looky... from article published October 7, 2005"Senator Barack Obama, Democrat of Illinois, said in an interview that Michael O. Leavitt, the secretary of health and human services, told senators in a closed-door briefing last week that the administration would soon place an order to raise the government's Tamiflu stockpile to 81 million courses - up from 12 million to 13 million courses expected by the end of 2006. Mr. Obama has long been urging the government to buy more Tamiflu."
So, it appears there were 12-13 million courses already in the US stockpile as of October 2005. I have Tamiflu in my cupboard from when the whole family got sick with flu. We were prescribed Tamiflu, but we didn't take it. My Tamiflu was prescribed in April 2006 and it expires April 2010, so it must have been manufactured in April 2005. I would hazard a guess and say that the initial Government stockpile of 12-13 million were also from the April 2005 batch. So, that's 12-13 million courses of Tamiflu that are going to expire April 2010. The lengthening of the shelf life to seven years in 2008, in theory, should not effect the already produced Tamiflu... as they will already have expiration dates stamped on the box. Or the storage conditions were not conducive to extending the shelf life. Yup - looks like there's a shed load of Tamiflu that needs using up! Edit to add - I am not convinced on these dates entirely and am still digging...

Posted 11/13/2006] Roche and FDA notified healthcare professionals of revisions to the PRECAUTIONS/Neuropsychiatric Events and Patient Information sections of the prescribing information for Tamiflu, indicated for the treatment of uncomplicated acute illness due to influenza infection in patients 1 year and older who have been symptomatic for no more than 2 days and for the prophylaxis of influenza in patients 1 year and older. There have been postmarketing reports (mostly from Japan) of self-injury and delirium with the use of Tamiflu in patients with influenza. People with the flu, particularly children, may be at an increased risk of self-injury and confusion shortly after taking Tamiflu and should be closely monitored for signs of unusual behavior. A healthcare professional should be contacted immediately if the patient taking Tamiflu shows any signs of unusual behavior http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/safety/2006/safety06.htm#tamifluRoche Laboratories and FDA notified healthcare professionals of new preclinical safety data that have implications for the use of Tamiflu in very young children. Preclinical findings in juvenile rats have raised concerns regarding the use of Tamiflu in infants less than 1 year of age. A single dose of 1000 mg/kg oseltamivir phosphate (about 250 times the recommended dose in children) in 7-day-old rats resulted in deaths associated with levels of oseltamivir phosphate in the brain approximately 1500 times those seen in adult animals. It is likely that these high exposures are related to an immature blood-brain barrier. The clinical significance of these preclinical data to human infants is uncertain. Given the uncertainty in predicting the exposures in infants with immature blood-brain barriers, it is recommended that Tamiflu not be administered to children younger than 1 year.

I'm not sure how much this adds to the discussion but as an FYI... According to this website in regards to Tamiflu: http://www.riverterrace.org/tamiflu/tamiflu-expiration-date-ca195.htmlWhat is the shelf life of the pills? The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.

Sure - the links in my post #14 should provide enough guidance on the moving goalposts of their expirations dates I started a post early this morning but couldn't finish before I had to run off to a meeting. I took a photo of the Tamiflu box that I was prescribed in April 2006. The expiration date is April 2010. This tells me that any stockpiles that were made before the big push in 2006, are going to be the same age or older than the box I have, and therefore should be up for expiry. edit to add: that lot # must be a red herring - will dig around some more. We are 99.9% on the time lines on expiration dates and increases, and there was never a 9 year expiration! Will dig around some more...

That must be old info from pre-2002. My post #14 shows a link to a Roche pdf that increases the expiry to three years. It was increased again to five years (cannot find a date reference), and was increased again in November 2008 to seven years... they knew that a whole bunch was about expire... However, there are conditions to the extension and some may not be covered.
