Yesterday (12 April 2010), another census-taker came a knocking at my door--this time I did not answer. I watched her drive away and go to my neighbor's across the road (who are also home), and noticed, they too, didn't answer their door as well!

(13 April 2010) The persistent pest came again today around lunchtime, and again, I did not answer the door. The question was already answered. We have nothing more to say to them!

We sent their form back with the first questioned answered correctly, and left the rest blank. My understanding is that I have no Constitutional obligation to answer or even respond to those other questions during a census, therefore to be consistant, I feel I shouldn't even acknowledge them in any way on the form, otherwise to me that would be a fraudulant answer, and in opposition to my understanding of constitutional law.
Legally, any questions other than the number of voting age residents for the purpose of a national census is unconstitutional, in my opinion.

I do not think it is an opinion, I definitely know it is a fact.

I answered the first two questions, the rest were filled out with N\A. Dan

Okay so...
I filled out the one question I needed to fill out on the census form.
First, a lady came over and gave a note to my daughter. I called the number and explained to them that I filled out the census form already, and that no further information was required. They denied that the numbers (which they asked me for) on the form were GPS numbers.
The lady came over again, again, I was unavailable, when my tenant answered the door, and spoke with the lady, she said "So you refuse to answer the questions?"
....
I called the number, once again, to explain to them that I had no obligation to answer anymore questions. They understood, and that was that....
... I thought.
Well, today, I got a call--- again, from another census taker, and I was trying to figure out, "HOW THE HELL DID THEY GET MY PHONE NUMBER WHEN I NEVER GAVE IT."
Well, I explained to the guy that I already answered the question on the form, and he said, "Is it right that 5 people live here?" And I said, "No, I legibly wrote on the form that seven people live here." And he said "That's why we need to verify these things." I thought to myself, "Um because you can't read a NUMBER 7?" Then he proceeded to ask me if this was my name, and I said, "Hold on a second. I never filled out that information, and I have no obligation to answer that question, and you have no right asking me it because it's none of your business."
He said, "Section (blah blah blah) of the privacy code says we can't share this information" or whatever and I said, "Look, I talked to a lawyer. I know the law. I don't have to give that information. The census is for enumeration only, and I don't have to answer any more questions other than how many people live here." He sounded kind of exasperated. I said "I don't mean to be rude, but I know the law, and that's all I am going to answer." And he said, "Have a nice day, then." And I said, "Bye."
What the heck? I am so sick of these people!!!!!

It's frustrating indeed, but people need to stand for what's right, just like you did. Many of the people involved in that whole ordeal aren't even aware of their constitutional rights, they just get the job and do what gets them a paycheck.

Perhaps we should do it 'congressman' style. Have them contact your 'secretary' and arrange a time for a meeting. Then, after that, you can send them a canned letter and request a change on the appointment time due to 'pressing issues that arose'.

My experience last week.
I saw her GPSING from the sidewalk, then she came to the door. They came because they "didn't get ze papers in the mail" So I straight told the lady I will not release my age income or race to the Federal Government. She looked semi panicky and said OK. Then she asked how many people were here on April 1st, I gave the honest answer she said ok and left. I win minus the GPS which they could get whenever really.

So an update:
ANOTHER WORKER CAME OVER TO MY HOUSE AGAIN!!!!!
Called my congressional rep (again) and explained the situation. They're supposed to be getting back to me.
So let's recap: "How many times does a census worker have to contact (harass) a homeowner before they leave them alone?"(and we still don't know if they're done yet.)
1... 2... 3... 4...
Appears to be four so far.

... So another census taker came over to my house, this time knocking on my back door, asking about my neighbors. ... ... Then he asked my name (how convenient) and of course I told him that was none of his business. So 1... 2... 3... 4... 5... Five times so far now. Playin' phone tag with Steve Kagan's office now, hopefully I'll be able to talk to the LA over there and get a report in.

They are persistent little buggers aren't they? I hear that their money (read the above article how they aren't even getting paid) runs out by July (maybe it already has!) so, we should soon stop seeing these people.
