Earth Day Co-founder’s Dark Past
« on: April 22, 2009, 09:38:33 PM »
Seeing as today is "Earth Day", I thought this article contains some interesting and relevant material that many of you may not be aware of.

Ira Einhorn a.k.a. "The Unicorn Killer" (b. 1940 - ):

Earth Day Co-founder’s Dark Past

"Founded by environmentalists in the late 1960s and officially initiated by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, at least one ecologist/activist who lays claim to being instrumental in creating that first official Earth Day has rather a dark and murderous past, and ties to present-day prominent politicians.

Ira Einhorn, an icon of the counterculture anti-establishment and anti-war movement in the ‘60s and ‘70s, and friend of Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman, was on stage as master of ceremonies for the first ever Earth Day event, televised globally.

Holly Maddux, a beautiful Bryn Mawr College graduate, dated and then lived with Einhorn for a time, their five-year affair ending in 1977. At Einhorn’s demand, Maddux, who had fled Einhorn’s company, returned to his apartment to retrieve her things. She was never seen alive again.

Holly Maddux (b. 1947 - d. 1977):

Eighteen months later the reek of decomposing human flesh alerted neighbors that something was indeed wrong, and they in turn alerted the authorities who discovered Maddux’ body stuffed in a trunk in the closet of Einhorn’s apartment. He was charged with murder on March 28, 1979.

The remains of Holly Maddux as found by police:

A Philadelphia newspaper, The Bulletin, reports for us some interesting details:

'At the bail hearing, Mr. Einhorn was praised by a contingent of luminaries — all testifying to his character. There were Ivy League professors, an Episcopalian minister and corporate executives who worked with Mr. Einhorn raising funds. They all stated under oath that he was a man of the greatest integrity.

Arlen Specter, currently Pennsylvania’s senior United States Senator, was Mr. Einhorn’s attorney. He managed to get the bail set at the unheard of amount of $40,000 for the suspected murderer. Only 10 percent was needed to free him. Barbara Bronfman, heiress to the Seagram liquor fortune, paid it.'

Predictably, Einhorn skipped town and fled to France. He flew under the radar for 10 years, and was discovered only after being convicted in absentia, in 1997. He was only extradited after a Pennsylvania state legislator, Daniel O’Brien, introduced and managed to get enough support to pass a special bill that would allow the convicted murderer a new trial in order to appease the French government and the European Court of Human Rights. Those two foreign entities require that anyone tried and convicted in absentia get a new trial, or no extradition will take place.

Einhorn is taken into custody by French officials:

He got his new trial in the United States, was convicted, and sentenced to life in prison on October 17, 2002, after just two hours of deliberation. Before his extradition, he tried to slit his own throat, perhaps sensing the climate of justice that was prevailing in the United States at the time.

March 28, 1979, just happens to be the biggest of all environmental disasters — to environmentalists, that is — in U.S. history; Three Mile Island. But it was Ira Einhorn, the ecologist/environmentalist co-founder of Earth Day, who did the real killing."

You cannot make this shit up.

Tell all your Earth Day cultists that their leader is worse than Jim Jones and not to drink the CIA tainted Kool Aid. Or allow a Kool Aid vaccine, or get shot while running in the jungle by SAS , Mossad, and Black Ops

What relationship -- if any -- did Ira Einhorn have with John McConnell?

Does anyone know?

[ After the decades its easy to disassociate Ira from the "movement" ]

http://www.amgot.org/einhorn/eday.htm
Date: November 27, 1998
From: Meg Wakeman 206 783 4824 (voice)
To: Interested members of the Press

Subject: Important New Information about Ira Einhorn, accused murderer of my sister, Holly Maddux, and the fiction he created about his involvement in the first Earth Day.

Background:

Like most of the national and international media, you have probably carried one or more stories in recent months about the "hippie guru," Ira Einhorn, the recently captured fugitive who fled the United States twenty years ago after being indicted for the murder of my sister, Holly Maddux, and who was convicted of this crime five years ago by a Philadelphia jury. You probably also carried a story reporting that after Einhorn was apprehended in 1997 in France, authorities there refused to extradite him to the U.S. on the basis that the French disapproved of the fact that Einhorn had been tried in absentia. You may also know that the Pennsylvania legislature recently passed a law that provides that Einhorn can get a new trial if he is returned to the U.S. and that the Court in Bordeaux is going to hold a hearing next week to reconsider whether to extradite Einhorn in light of the new law. Finally, like many other members of the Philadelphia and national press, you may have stated or implied as part of your background information about Einhorn in your previous coverage that he had been an organizer or even "the organizer" of the first Earth Day in Philadelphia in 1970. That claim is false.

New Information:

Attached is a letter, which unequivocally asserts that Einhorn was not one of the organizers of Earth Day in 1970, which I just received from nine former members of the Earth Week Committee of Philadelphia, the group that actually did organize that historic event in 1970.

When my sister announced over twenty years ago that she was going to bring her boyfriend to dinner with my family in Tyler, Texas, she introduced Einhorn as the organizer of the first Earth Day, an assertion Einhorn did not contradict in our presence, but one about which Holly had no personal knowledge. It is no secret that my family reacted very negatively to Einhorn. My parents, in particular, thought Einhorn was a fraud and did not believe, among other things, the Earth Day story, but at that time they had no information to the contrary.

My family and I believe that this self-serving "do-gooder" fiction about Einhorn’s and the first Earth Day, which he successfully perpetrated about himself, probably also played a role in convincing many respected Philadelphians to support Einhorn’s release on bail twenty years ago. We are also concerned that it may even be playing some role now as the French authorities reconsider whether to extradite him. Therefore, when my family and I travel to France next week to attend the December 1st extradition hearing, we will provide the French authorities and the French press copies of the attached letter. For more information call Ed Furia, 425 688 1216 or Austan Librach, 512 451 7171.

 November 27, 1998

To whom it may concern:

We are former members of the original 1970 Earth Week Committee of Philadelphia. Our group, which was made up of 33 members and 92 sponsors, organized the first Earth Day and Earth Week in Philadelphia. We were inspired to undertake this activity because of a speech that was given in 1969 by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, the founder of Earth Day. His idea was implemented not only in Philadelphia, but also in thousands of communities across America in 1970. This was an event designed to publicize the environmental problems that our society was facing as well as the means to address those problems. Philadelphia’s Earth Week in 1970 is widely viewed as having been the most successful such event in the country, having involved world famous scientists, educators, business people, political leaders, and most importantly, thousands and thousands of ordinary people. We are proud to say that Earth Day in Philadelphia effectively focused attention on environmental problems in a very positive way and contributed to the groundswell of public concern that led to the passage of the landmark environmental legislation of the 1970’s.

Much to our dismay, we now find that the self-styled hippie guru and alleged murderer of Holly Maddux, Ira Einhorn, has been taking credit for initiating and/or organizing Earth Day. He is not telling the truth. A group of very dedicated young people worked very hard to organize Earth Day, but Einhorn was not one of them. In fact, Einhorn was asked to leave several meetings of the organizing committee which he attempted to disrupt. He was not welcome there, nor did he contribute in any material way to the committee’s activities. Einhorn, given a small role on the stage at Earth Day, grabbed the microphone and refused to give up the podium for thirty minutes, thinking he would get some free television publicity. We just waited until he had completed his "act" and then got on to the serious business at hand, the keynote speech of U.S. Senator Edmund Muskie, author of the landmark U.S. Clean Air Act of 1970.

Again, Ira Einhorn’s claims that he was a founder or organizer of Earth Day are false. He is a fraud. His lies do a real disservice to those of us who were and are deeply concerned about our planet’s environmental problems and who have worked hard to solve them.

Regardless of his involvement in the first Earth Day, he was a 60's radical and is a murderer.

From Wiki:

"Einhorn was active in ecological groups and was an icon of the counterculture, anti-establishment and anti-war movements of the 1960s and 1970s. At one time, he was a friend and contemporary of Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman. He also claimed to have been instrumental in creating Earth Day in 1970, and during the first Earth Day event, which was televised globally, Ira Einhorn was on stage as master of ceremonies, although other event organizers dispute his account."

How much of the EARTH DAY dis-ing of this creep is them just trying to dis-engage from a convicted murderer?

He just had a 'small part' in the event, but grabbed the mike and refused to 'give up the podium'?

If his status as a murderer is irrelevant to his alleged involvement in the original Earth Day, then why even mention this disputed involvement in the first place?

Possibly, but if you look at the man's history of bahavior it all makes sense.

http://www.amgot.org/einhorn/einfaqe.htm

Was he the "inventor of Earth Day"?
During Philadelphia's Earth Day, an event organized in all the large cities, the MC allowed him the mike to announce the poet Allan Guinsberg, but he then hogged the mike, apparently hoping to be seen during the televised portion.  See Statement by the real organizers of Earth Day.  http://www.amgot.org/einhorn/eday.htm

He then used this fame to develop contacts in the world of movers and shakers.
...
Is he a "gentle pacifist"

He is very appealing to those who might give him recognition, but with others he can be very abusive, as his wife knows full well.  He committed to his diary sadistic and Nietzschean fantasies at the time he attacked and nearly killed two young women previous to this act.  Recently he suggested that these were just innocent extracts from Oscar Wilde, but his words reveal otherwise.  See http://www3.phillynews.com/packages/einhorn/einhornback2.html, (search for Bennington).

FLASHBACK: Earth Day Co-Founder Killed, Composted His Girlfriend

Here’s an inconvenient truth about the self-described founder of a Earth Day: He murdered and composted his girlfriend.

Environmental activist and self-proclaimed Earth Day co-founder Ira Einhorn had a dark side. NBC News reported in 2011 that Einhorn was found guilty of murdering his ex-girlfriend and stuffing her “composted” body inside a trunk.
...

NBC News reports that, “Taking the stand in his own defense, Einhorn claimed that his ex-girlfriend had been killed by CIA agents who framed him for the crime because he knew too much about the agency’s paranormal military research.”

Earth Day was created in the spring of 1970 to raise awareness of and take action on the pressing environmental issues of the time. Einhorn was master of ceremonies at the first Earth Day celebration at Fairmount Park in Philadelphia on April 22, 1970. He still maintains the holiday was his idea and he was responsible for launching it, though most activists credit Wisconsin Sen. Gaylord Nelson instead.

Glad you dug it up Tahoe...

The first earth-day was set on April 22, 1970 To commemorate the 100th anniversary on that day of the birth of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, a.k.a. Vladimir Lenin

The interesting thing about the 3rd week of April is that strange and at times pivitol events seem destined to happen during this time. Among those being the 19th is Patriot's Day "the shot heard 'round the world" in 1775. The 20th is the birthday of Adolf Hitler born in 1895. The 21st is the birthday of Elizabeth II of England born in 1926... (my own as well in 1947). The 22nd is the Birthday of Vladimir Lenin as already mentioned, and the 23rd is the Birthday of William Shakespeare in 1664.

An action packed 5 days, when these and other events on these days in recent years are considered.

protect the people against the crown. Here the judges
should not be independent of the people, but be

would always re-elect the good judges."

Yes lets not forget Lenin ...  the date of "earth day" seems the most significant feature ... very numerical and illuminating

In photos: the changing face, hair and statues of Lenin

THEY erected statues to Vladimir Ilich Ulyanov Lenin, In all of them he looks aged and sporting a noble brow. But how do you remember the great leader? Is that image what he would have wanted?

Born 22 April 1870, this is Lenin
in aged 3 or 4.
